    Hunting recommendations Levin

    Hi all,

New to hunting around the Levin/Horowhenua area. Does anyone have any recommended hunting areas or spots they wish to share with a newbie for the Levin area? (looking for deer mostly), I know there are plenty of walking tracks leading into the Tararuas but looking for which ones are best/recommended.

Used to hunt up the camelbacks years ago, up the head of the Johnston and waiti streams. Always deer about.

Cheers, can you just walk up the stream avoiding private property until you hit DOC land?

Used to walk up the makahika ( I think) you used to be able to walk across farmland at the end of the road. Have mates that still hunt up there and pretty sure that’s still the way they go

Pretty much anywhere in the Doc country you will find deer now , up the Ohau, Blackwater , Square Knob , Makahika , Mill Block , Mangahao are all worth a look

You can drive into the mangahao Damns (car parks, not the reservoir) and there are walking options from there. Just don’t leave valuables in your car if you away for too long.

I've had a decent amount of success south in Otaki forks area. The slip blocking the road seems to have made the area be more reclaimed by nature closer to the camp site. I've got 3 deer only about an hour from the campsite, and a couple more just a touch further in
