    Ideas for a salt lick?

I'm looking to plant a salt lick on a clearing. I've never made one so open to ideas on how to make one that won't get washed away by the rain.

The best idea I've been able to come up with is a warratah with some kind of hat on it, but no details on what the hat is or how it's attached. Lol. The local seed store sells large chunks of Himalayan rock salt.

What's the wisdom? There's plenty of practical geniuses on here. Time to prove it.

I prefer to put them in the bush edge next to the clearing and use 2 or 3 litre milk bottles with a small hole in the bottom tied or nailed to a tree, condensation and humidity will drip feed the salt and slowly run down the bark....molasses done the same way works a treat.

Those Farmlands compressed salt ones don't hold up well in the rain. Those big lumps of Himalayan rock salt last much better.

It is possible to drill holes in the big lumps of Himalayan rock salt and tie them up in a tree so the rain does all the work for you.

Equestrian outlets sell small 2kg blocks, $4, last very well in the weather.

Are the chunks broken up so they fit in the bottle and the lid is on?

I was thinking keeping the chunks intact and protected from the rain would be better. I was thinking of drilling a hole, yes and using baling twine.

I buy a block of Himalayan salt that already has a hole in it, maybe 1kg from Farmlands.
They're bloody cheap and last ages

I had a plant ecologist hunting mate tell me (AFTER I had carted a 20 kg salt lick into the Kaimanawas!) that I would have improved success at dragging deer in with 20kgs of fertiliser.

Certainly, in a landscape as malnourished as most of the Kaimanawas, its something to consider.

Cam speedy got best results by sweetening grass with fert in te matai

Once he stopped applying fert it all went back to shit grass again.

Go too high with nitrogen and the hinds abort next years fawns.

Wild deer have no idea what a mineral block is
