Good luck to them:XD: if there not local there going to have a shit time to start with.
Really can't see them doing this as the Kaimais gets a lot of hunting pressure.
Sometimes Regional Councils contract cullers when deer are being a nuisance in land that they administer. Just little hot spots usually. Its no big deal.
Most of the current cullers, and their contracts, are focussed on goats.
Don't think they would make much of a dent in the population. The bush they live in works more in favor of the deer then the hunter.
Did goats out the back of KatiKati in the 80s for farmers, the bush definitely favoured the animals.
That's interesting. Heard of some around the Killarney lakes.

I have read a couple of forum posts over the last few months regarding deer numbers in the northern Kaimais upsetting DOC. They want to keep deer out of the Coromandel so don't like too many deer north of Te Aroha.
I wouldn't think a helicopter would be too successful in the Kaimai ranges, but would get a few deer by working the farmland and edges if they could get permission from the landowners.
So long as they dont target the nicely growing Fallow herd in there im not worried. Its just starting to produce some nice heads.
" I have never encountered Amy goats in the kaimai's. They must be doing a good job. "
Head to dalys flat hut - Mr 8 shot a decent billy a few weeks back, 29" spread. Loads of "tourists' though so weekends are def out for shooting the riverbeds in that area, which is where we had a few goat sightings. MR Billy was shot on that big nob behind the hut, no chance of any tourists up there.
Sounds like I need to do a mission to te aroha way

you can thank the a farm just north of Te Aroha for doing their bit, couple of good bucks reside in there and venture into the bush to help raise the quality
Not a lot of country North of Te Aroha!
Not that Fallow need a lot.
I heard that they spent a couple million back in the 80's to sort the goats out using Judas goats seemed to do a good job culling the goat population. One of our neighbours was a key man at the old Gordon base.
Gave me all the old trap line tracks. Helped me in not getting lost on some of the more hairy parts of the Waikato side of things:O_O: didn't help much in dodging the supplejack:sick: that justs take time and patients;)
Cullers are being put into the Waitewheta to reduce goat numbers ,few in past the Hut & up around Tiere rd ,old mill site threw to Woodlands rd hut .
Deer won't go past the Karangahaki gorge area is lacking mineral & trace elements the deer need. In short its "Cattle sick country" .They been in the
Kaimai way over hundred years if they where going to populate the Coromandel they would of by now you think .
Last tvda newsletter says otherwise chris
Sorry - to deer crossing the gorge
The tvda don't know squat, the few isolated deer in the Coromandel have either escaped from farms or been released .
That includes the Fallow in behind Thames. Its Cattle sick country & deer won't live in it ,no deer have passed Dickey's
flat. The way it has always been ,Digby had some escape a while back but recovered all 35 animals. He had the Deer Farm
at Owhara . I was the guy that told him they where out side the fence .
Also another farm that has done that on the quiet, this one has around low 20's so far and establishing well.
Id be interested to know what happened to the 11 wap crosses that escaped from the lifestyle block in the Waiwawa catchment a few months back during that flood.
My cuz shot 1 in Waka; couple of years ago .Big boy with no balls & in velvet ,head went 18 kg ,think the animal went 300 lb on hook .
Don't you love escapes . Tasted OK too .
Probably not worth breeding from.
no fellow in the kiamias
would be surprised if there wasn't. Nice grass close to very dense bush is fallow heaven. I imagine they will be populated in isolated pockets. Best thing is DOC cannot do shit about culling them as they are the only deer in NZ not classed as a pest because they are grazers not foragers so do not smash saplings and natives.
what i have been made aware by some farmers in the Naki. DOC came around and threatened them and a few people that they were going to cull the fallow but because people knew the rules they told them to fuck off hahaha.
See that makes sense to me. I was quite tentative at first but they were dead set certain also where i was could not ask for proof(deep in the kawekas)
Would rather they were right but seems they had the wrong end of the stick!
Kaimai deer cullers? Just coz we couldnt shoot one, now it has to have been culled ae @Russian 22. ? Lets stop trying to find excuses for being absolutely useless. and go shoot the damned things!
I kid :XD: But seriously, theres only one deer left in the kaimais and we spooked it. anyone want to give us access to their farm with heaps of fallow? promise we'll be good. Also, said farm should ideally have some sambar stags too but we can live with just fallow if we must. thanks
The farmer shouldn't have. Take the nuts out the stag will stay in velvet. Need the nuts to complete the cycle. Soft go hard then drop off, soft(velvet) then hard;antler). Even if they don't breed from them you still leave the nuts in.
