It has been happening for a long time in a lot of ways. Blocking or digging up access roads and tracks, pulling down old huts (I'm sure they all weren't that bad and could've saved lives in an emergency), trying their best to eradicate animals and supporting the reduction and eventually elimination of firearms.
Double edged sword the last two. If there are no animals, why do we need guns. Then we wont need to go in the precious environment in the first place and the evil guns are gone as well,win-win
They are in reality, preservationists not conservationists. That's why it seems like there is no middle ground with them. Its their way or nothing and every little win is a step in their direction.
And they tout tourism as the best thing for jobs since sliced bread. That only works for their mates they set up, not the workers who only get seasonal, crap paying jobs that do little for the economy. They don't make enough, nor employ enough to support communities like the old school industries did.
