Got me one of those tailors tape measures off the missus for this very purpose. ;)
I've often thought about what is the most ecologically virtuous pest to shoot. with goats for instance a Billy is only worth the native Veg it will eat in the rest of its life. Culling nannies will be more beneficial. An economist like Gareth would have a discounted future value formula that factors in the potential rate ofpopulation increase (exponential in many Nz localities).
likewise, a young animal will have more years of eating and reproducing ahead of it.
If we have an expert On feral cat Population structure in NZ here, it would be interesting to hear whether killing young cats or even kittens has any effect on the total population.
Gareth Cat Morgan..a sick twisted self centred f*** wit. Just another self claimed conservationist..his mum read him a naughty cat story when he was just a baby weasel..aint a hunters arse hole and never will be
Why certain people cant see through this creature is beyond me.
Correct............. I don't like him lol.
just measured the kids cat what a prick of a job as its still live only 132 so not worth shooting .the neighbors though have a big male might have a beer over there tonight.
shit i have got to stop typing aloud some one will read me.:D
If you keep an eye on game birds around a rural property - as I have done with Pheasants - you see the joy of them living safely in your environment along with the sadness of them being wiped out by predators
Often the first sign of a cat being around is a pheasant carcase - carefully picked to pieces by a cat - then another carcase and another - the predator usually makes a fatal mistake and decides to try fresh rabbit, sardines or Chef chicken and salmon casserole - in a cage
I have trapped one or two cats and don’t recall ever seeing one that was scrawny or unhealthy - so they eat very well - generally rabbits as rat numbers were always low - but hen Pheasants on their nests are very easy pickings for predators
I like the idea of the Disney score for rats - I have got 15 this week - 2 hit by a Victor but dropped clear of the trap - maybe another 5 this morning - March - rat numbers exploding

Gareth Morgan is full of shit about cats.
Even the DOC biologists were mystified at his claims that feral cats were decimating native birds, and publicly disagreed with him. If what he was saying was true then Fiordland national park would be full of feral cats. It is not. The reason why is that cats are natural predators of rodents, and wild cats live on the edge of human habitation because there is a good supply of rats and mice there. They are purpose built for rodent hunting. They take birds as targets of opportunity, but a cat dropped into the bush with lots of native birds and no rodent supply would starve to death quickly.
The man has done nothing of note. Why would you take his word for anything?
"He gets my support for having the balls to stand up and tell it like it is about cats.
I have one here that is going to get "scored" in the next day or two."
+1 for this !!

Warning if your a cat lover....stop reading this now !!
I'm still catching possums at work but we noticed something was cleaning up the carcasses. Firstly started finding them like this.

Then found one like this
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e22ec54681.jpg
The surgical nature of that cut through the skin suggested a feral cat (we are miles from any house)
So I took a couple of cat raps up there this week. One a Steve Allen cat kill trap
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bd733673cf.jpg
And the other was the trusty old cage trap both were baited with rabbit
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...353f6506c9.jpg
It was the cage that got him
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...baa1189534.jpg
It was the biggest dam Tom cat I've ever seen !!!
Nose to tail measured 94cm
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a39b67cb49.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c94b23e8aa.jpg
Tail measured 30cm
Girth was 49cm
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...17b59293c4.jpg
+ a bonus 10pts for a set of nuts
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ae5b0d6762.jpg
Morgan score 94 + 30 + 49 + 10 = 183
This thing was a frickin beast !!! Had some fishing scales in the car and it weighed in at a whopping 6.5kgs massive head and a body packed full of mussel !!!

I get a few wild cats here, i use tin fish tied in a stocking on the trigger in a cage trap.Last one i got was a small kitten kids wanted to keep as a pet but when they went near it it hissed at them and they said 'dad you can shoot that'.
Saw paw prints at 1600m behind island saddle, couple nights later driving along the road at night and saw eyes, lifted up the 308 and thought :wtfsmilie: is it a calf, realised I was on 15x zoom, bloody huge tom walking up the road towards us, 200m 150gr to the neck/ back of head made a big mess. Those that measure a tom are game they bastard stunk to high heaven. Both of us reckoned it would have topped 10kg, have pictures somewhere
Totally agree Muzza, they're high grade murderers. We're cat people but I blast every wild one I see. Shot a huge black tom a few years back- fat as and a serious killing machine. Been eating rabbits I guess as there were plenty there.
Our big Maine Coon scores a lot of rodents (last one an hour ago) but he can also be out and back inside within 5 mins with a yellowhammer.
Wish I'd known about the "Morgan Score" when I got this big boy a few months ago. He was quite the best, would have measured up well

Plenty of ginger mocks aboutAttachment 88986
Meant to add that your Tom had a great set of nuts maybe worth an extra bonus.
Have tried to attach a photo that I have previously posted of Tess with a brace she treed after an epic on ground battle and chase - two treed at the same time must be a rarity. I suspect she surprised them in-coupelo (spelling ?)
Get a few cage traps they are really effective especially on cats and you can easily let go unwanted catches.
True story he did stink to buggery !! However I recently caught a ferret in a cage trap and personally found its smell far more offensive !!
I caught that big fellas misses today in the same trap with hardly any bait left. Pretty sure she went in there because of his smell. No more breading for those two!!!

The Weka's will be extra happy now when they have their evening 'Roll Call'
To be honest, I was quite shocked and sickened when I saw the photo of all those dead kiwi. However they were killed and I cannot say that my dog Tui would not do the same if left to run in the bush either, she very likely would, so your posting is a good wake-up on that. As far as wild cats, few people realise just how many are out there. When a local forest block here was clear-felled, cats came pouring out, and I shot 23 round the sheds in one week alone. About 12 years ago a farm between Hawarden and the Waipara Gorge undertook an intensive cat trapping program to reduce Toxoplasmosis related abortions in their stock. Result 396 cats caught !!
Of all the blatant cheek.... went over to the duck pond to plant out some trees and it was just like the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. Not who's been sleeping in my bed, but a cat was sleeping in the MaiMai. Anyway this story ending is an adult version and differs to the children's one in that, 'Goldilocks' was routed from father bears bed, treed by an angry barking dog and didn't get to eat porridge ever again !.
I have seen wild dogs out and about (last time in the south island). They are there just not as common as cats but apparently a lot more destructive on some species. In both cases it's not the animals fault but the irresponsible owners who don't control, neuter or keep them under control.
RIP TOP :-)
Addition to Morgan Score..no it wasn’t measured..

Beauty!
I dealt to a couple of wild cats on Stewart Island. They devastate the birdlife there, no doubt about it. The little bastards got an authentic cage diving experience (no rimfire on me unfortunately)
Cats might well need to be dead but they're not bastards for being what they are.
Cats are said to be the most purely carnivorous group among mammals ( much more so than dogs that can be fed all manner of cereals, carrots and old socks yet remain in rude good health). When a cat eats grass, catnip etc it seems to be largely recreational. Wild ones have to eat meat (or eggs); they just dont have the psychology nor physiology for voluntary veganism that humans do.
Dry biscuits are not a natural or optimal food for cats and if pet owners had to feed their kittikins real meat there would be a lot fewer of them.
