National creates a Hunting and Fishing portfolio

Well that's interesting. A shadow hunting and fishing portfolio where an actual Minister doesn't exist could foreshadow a new Ministerial position.
H&F spokesperson is Todd McLay. Do we know anything about his position on H&F?

Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.

Of course they'll create a populist shadow portfolio.

They'll leap at anything that might gain them votes.

The real question is "what will they deliver?"

Remember the Blue team backed the Red team's first firearms law reforms.

They only changed their minds when they saw what way the wind was blowing later.

A plague on all parliamentary parties.

McClay has presented trophies at CNIGC service rifle shoots, but then also voted to take them away. His local branch head is on the NZSRA national committee, and McClay is a lot less PC in person than when there's a camera in his face. He'll get my candidate vote, but party vote will still be ACT.

It’s a positive step in the right direction, even if they are only “reading the room”. It shows that they are aware it’s a live issue with a decent number of voters. I guess the key is to get details about what Nashnull (& others) are actually committed to doing in the H&F space…

Just listened to Luxon from Napier. When asked about the Hunting & Fishing portfolio he replied the well being of NZers is paramount and healthy recreation leads to that end. Plenty of opportunity to work in with NZDA Hunts courses and things like that, I think it is a good move and well overdue our sport(s) is recognised in it's own right, plus giving us a seat at the table too with the commercial operators and DOC. Barbara Kuriger has been named Nats DOC spokesperson, she is rural and will be looking to make a decent fist of it to get back up the cabinet rankings. Now hopefully tie in a coalition with Act and bring Nicole McKee & Firearms into the picture and things are looking good and very hopeful for the Hunting/Shooting Community - Us.

Rider, this is posted as an observation not a political type broadcast of any sort. Regards.

I wonder whether it'll change anything in the fishing space, the commercial guys are pretty big donors to the National Party, money talks.

I'd be interested in seeing exactly what the policy goals etc are before judging.

Take the positives where you can, and it's not the only good news today.

Interesting times. Hope it all works out well for recreational hunters, shooters, and fisherman.

Speaking to the Rotorua Daily Post, McClay said he was “very pleased” to be taking on the new portfolio in addition to tourism and trade.

“There are one million recreational fishers in New Zealand [and] 250,000 people who actively hunt, and many of them will feel they’ve never had a voice around the Cabinet table.

“It’s an opportunity now to make sure that the things that are important to them are not only heard [but] can be delivered in a future National government.”

National was repeatedly told that supporting the new legislation would cost them votes. They either didn't believe it, or thought the trade off in possible support from general population was worth it.

License holders got Winston out and nationals support plummeted. Seems they may have realized that license holder will follow through and actively vote.

Still not voting national, fuck em.

Or......they may be confident they can take this out without the ACT voters and are simply strategising to get those ACT voters to once again vote blue. And then they will do a Winnie, and fuck us over yet again.

Employ brain, not heart. Keep Greens and Labour out. Vote accordingly.
