Post New Tahr Control Plan 2019/20 Agreed

A new plan has been agreed to by interested parties, seems sensible enough. It will be good if the Hunter returns App comes off.

I noticed the Tahr foundation wasn't approched for Comment. Doc have been fucking hopeless to say the less with trying to work together. Don't let this poor excuse for an article persuade your opinion doc is actually trying to be proactive on There being any mature bulls left.

But but the spokes person from the NZDA says "We've been pleased that DOC listened to the concerns of the hunting sector". Is someone telling porkys? Or does the NZDA not consider the Tahr foundation is worth listening to or doesnt know they exist?

Is it just me or am I missing something?
Leaving bulls for trophy hunting sounds like a great idea in the short term, but where are we 5 or so years down the track when there have been no females in the population to sustain the herd? Where will the next generation of trophy bulls be coming from if right now ( and in the future) DOC are shooting all the nannys?
If we agree and think the current plan to reduce the herd by killing all the breeding animals is a good idea the government must be thinking hunters are short sighted idiots.
Also total eradication from National parks reduces the tahrs range by a fair amount and the "kill maps" show they are being taken from areas easily accessible to ground hunters (some from within sight of an NZDA sponsored hut).
Call me a skeptic but if hunting groups interests are being catered for I can't see it.

Snow Hewetson is the chairman of the Tahr Foundation and is also on the National Executive of the NZDA. So yeah... great comment

I prefer @Shearer 's ...manage the population rather than destroy it...a trophy is differnt to many people ...meat verse horn ....all of us NZers and our friends from over seas desire differnt things...

A lot better outcome than it might have been in the circumstances.

I'm still not a fan of the cull targeting nannies and juveniles. Don't know what others eat but they are the preferred target when I'm Tahr hunting. I'm gunna be pretty pissed if I have to walk 15km to find something to fill the freezer.
