Nice work! Only you can judge the ethics of the shot as you're the only one who knows the full context.
Steven Rinella said something along the lines of 'If you're surprised to have hit it then you probably shouldn't have tried the shot in the first place'. It is a great way to think about any shot as it has nothing to do with distance, energy, wind drift, bullet performance, etc. Can apply equally well to a marginal shot through a tiny hole in thick bush less than 20 metres away, or a thumper of a stag at 744 yards.
