Awesome show tonight.
I’d imagine 99% of us prefer not to bump into other hunters, and have the hills to ourselves.
I won’t say anymore, watch it :)

I agree with Nigel. "F#%k that!"
Good show and scenery.Im just not into climbing those mountains thats for sure.;)
30 years ago I might have, but certainly not now or ever again. Rock climbing was fun for quite a few years but Alpine is a whole other head game.
How? Is it on youtube?
TVNZ ON DEMAND, Duke channel.
I have bumped into other hunters twice when living in Hanmer. The second group turned out to be the roofing contractors due on one of our sites the next day.
Bumped into 2 groups of hunters in the space of 30min during the christmas break. They both turned up to see what we shot and to have a geeze.
Didnt see much on that trip other than the pig. Probably because the place was crawling with other hunters.

Unfortunately I’ve bumped in to a group of hunters in the general vicinity this weeks episode was filmed in. They chose to shoot a deer (took them 5 unsuppressed shots) only a couple of hundred metres from the hut we were using - with a light on in the hut at the time, and in full view of the hut.
My son was in the bush walking back to the hut less than 100 metres away from them when they let loose. I found out from a local farmer that one of the hunters involved was a volunteer with Search and Rescue from a West Coast town further north.
Epic trip so far, Bugger the peak climbing but I enjoy seeing a little of it makes the ep stand out.
Ripper of a Tahr for her amazing country and story to go with it
Yep, great show for sure: amazing scenery, great animal photography, camaraderie,....but watching the 3 descending a bloody steep icy/snowy slope with an horrendous drop off, and not being roped together..not good risk management.
I stalked a pig hunter and his dogs once. It's amazing how much a black dog can look like a goat in dense bush. Rifle was always pointed in a safe direction, so no drama. Another time, another hunt successfully called me in up in the Kawekas. His blue camo really stood out. Again, no drama.
That's the plan , Get out away from everyone
"watching the 3 descending a bloody steep icy/snowy slope with an horrendous drop off, and not being roped together..not good risk management"
It's pretty common practice in New Zealand if you're confident and good on your feet. It's also good risk management if there's nothing suitable to rig an abseil or belay anchor off or if you want to minimise exposure to falling rock and ice. If a group is merely roped together, one can fall and take the rest with them.
What a great episode! Really enjoyed the adventure.
Good to see them helping out those other fellas. Young lady got a tahr to remember, nice shot too [emoji106]
Pretty sure I spotted Emil wearing a kuiu pack..... or at least the harness [emoji41]

I reckon it was one of their best episodes. Loved the climbing, but it's certainly not for this scared of heights sooky! My sphincter still hasn't recovered from the constant clenching; and I was just watching the climb! ;)
You don’t see a problem with someone firing multiple shots within a couple of hundred metres of an occupied hut, knowing fully that there are other hunters in the immediate vicinity, but not knowing where they were??
I hope I never have the misfortune to hunt in the same area as you.
Obviously not done much hunting anywhere that gets busy. Had it happen a few times over the years, both in huts and tent camps in plain sight. Don’t get my gruts in a knot over it. Remember, always expect to see other people, positively identify your target and consider your firing zone and you won’t go far wrong. Worked for me for about 49 years now without incident.
Not in the slightest bit interested in hunting anywhere it is busy.
I know a guy who was shot by another hunter around 38 years ago and have seen first hand the issues it has caused him over the years. I’m quite happy to form my own opinion of what I find acceptable and what I don’t, and what you think is of no interest to me.
some of us have shot animals while can still hear mates putting in tent pegs.
some have shot animals from hut doorway
lots have shot stag in roar and then had another party anounce their presence after the shot
most will have shot animals off walking tracks
some will have been at very busy hut and a possum has turned up and been shot after warning other hut users..I know I have done so.
in may a lot of us will be firing shots 90mtrs away from other folks quite regularly for a month or three
as has been said as long as you have positive ID and good fireing zone ,you breaking no laws ,rules or risking anyones life.
DOC permit conditions state firearms cannot be discharged within 500 metres of a great walk hut and for other huts its a little ambiguous and says not with in the vicinity -quite what that means - be a lot clearer if they had stated a distance - I tend to agree with Micky Duck if a deer was 200 metres from a hut and was a safe shot I don't have a problem with that -I had way more of a problem with the clowns last roar trip who persisted in walking up and down the ridge opposite our camp continually roaring their stupid arse of and very badly at that - they shut up a number of stags that had been going
the vicinity of a track thing...makes the greenstone and caples somewhat "problimatic" as all of the river flats would be taboo...mt nimrod scenic reserve would be unhuntable, most of hook bush would be out of bounds..north opuha thats a BIG slice off the side gone....mt somers if you took say a 200 yard strip off the tracks it would leave bugger all left able to fire a shot in....
mt hut...big road up the guts, tracks around the bottom.....hope you got a couple of days or big wallet to fly out into back of block
get onto topo50 and draw a 400yard line across a walking track and see how utterly rediculas that is....and it would not make it safe if only using a shotgun and buckshot...incidentally do you know where the waterfowl 90 yards from another stand occupied by others without their permission comes from???? or why power level of a lead #BB comes in??? both combine to equal where a shotgun with birdshot pretty much stops being a leathal weapon and only has small chance of wounding ,and its a very small chance out that far.
were you to demand same with a centrefire...3km would go close, maybe 5 in some cases.... positive ID and safe background is where its at and always has been.
it was a great TV show..good on them.
Interesting that GD who experimented heaps withn the 7mm cal has gone up to the 30 cal, a 300 win mag with a 225g pill.
and then in the "tech talk section" raved about the prc 6.5 and 7mm.....that I found somewhat weird.
Great show.
I love listening to Greg but I too giggled when I heard him mentioned the 6.5 Prc which from what I gather is a waste of powder Hornady hype.
oh no the giggle bit was the .270 or .270WSM is good medium range cartridges......I reckon for Greg to say TWOSEVENTY is like the Fonz saying sorry... I had to replay the episode over and again the season they were using factory ammunition only and he says "use the .270" LMFAO.
Good on you. I’ve posted on here before about being on the receiving end of firearms on more than one occasion. Been lucky and survived, still carry some lead around in the body. Hasn’t put me off firearms or hunting, wary of situations and other people though. I would guess there’s more than a few on this forum that have done/survived shit where they thought ‘fuck, I got away with that’ and moved on. I don’t waste too much time worrying about past events, learn what you can from them and move on.
So what’s the problem with that?
