I was cautioned by Customs one day that certain scopes would attract their attention when exporting/importing. Run of the mill scopes obviously used for recreational activities do not concern them too much but anything that could be considered as a sniper scope raises eyebrows. I took that to mean that ordering your average vari-power scope with a standard reticle wasn't an issue, but ordering a high-power scope with all the bells n' whistles and a reticle that could be used for tactical long-range shooting purposes could present problems.
I'm not here to argue the ignorance of officials to an ever-evolving sport, but in these days of heightened awareness over terrorist activities you can understand that trying to order any scope with the word "Tactical" in its baseline description is possibly going to give you trouble.
There will always be somebody who can prove they didn't have any trouble importing such a scope but knowing my luck I simply chose not to test the system. On the plus side my recent purchase of a low-end Burris Droptine from The Rifle Scope Store went very smoothly with delivery in 12 days from ordering and best of all I saved $130, or about 30% cheaper than I could buy it in NZ... if I could buy it in NZ.
