I look for tracks and fresh sign
after that I figure out a position that commands this area in dawn or dusk
In this case of a small river, a steep bank hard up on one side of the river directed the animals to go lengthwise before they could cut back up the hill - at either end of this steep bank (say 400m long) the tracks tended to concentrate and funnel through.
the top of this bank was an eroded river terrace some 60m up and there was too much undergrowth to get a clear shot so I went into the wind on dusk and was rewarded with a tender wee yearling for my efforts.
