the main cause of lead poisoning is by inhalation, in its gaesous form lead is nasty stuff. not quite as nasty as high velocity lead but still bad. if you ate a small amount of lead it will take natures course with no ill effects. exposed to it daily its accumulative. same with mercury and most heavy metals
petrol used to contain tetra ethyl lead as an anti knocking agent and also to lube the valves. they took it out and replaced it with benzene which is a 100 times worse.
