    Roar Update - Kapiti

I was out culling rabbits last night and about midnight I heard the first plaintive roar drift across the Reikorangi valley. Reikorangi is about 100 - 150 meters above sea-level and got close to a frost last night. There are several deer farms up this way which always start early, but it is an indication that it is starting..... Happy hunting!

The farmed stags up against the DOC boundary by Mt Peel were going for it in the middle of the day yesterday.

As this colder weather starts to shift up the country, how's the Roar behavior from all the zones, farm and wild stags? Wallowing? Roaring?
I was in a Waikato Fallow block last week, they tend to come on a little later than the Red's but sign was bleak and wallows not used. No heavy trail traffic like Buck's were trying to round up some girls.

Plan is to head central plateau in a couple weeks, but if this weather keeps up i might need to reshuffle some work and rethink an earlier mid week trip.

There was very close to a (North island not south island) frost on the top of the Pukerua Bay hills last night. The framed stags in that area were having a little sing along!

I had one going well 1250m on Sunday (17th). He gave me the run around for an hour before he shut up and gave me the slip. Middle of the day, sunny and not cold.

Up the Otaki gorge early this morning in the dark for a walk, heard nothing. A bit of fresh sign about on some of the scrubby flats , talked to a possum trapper and another local who hadn't heard any roars yet.
