308 7/08 270 are the three biggest selling cals in NZ in sporting deer rifles and any one of them will do the job just fine .
The Howas are a great deal and any local gunshop can get them however the scope and rings are a bit on the average side and could do with upgrading sooner or later .The howas are also a bit on the weighty side.
Best thing is to head to a few shops and get hands on with a few rifles .Tikka Remmington Marlin Ruger all make fine rifles but they are all a little different in fit and feel which is very important .
Optic wise the bushnell 6500 3x9x40 at $500ish is a bloody good scope match that with a set of good rings and your done.
