One other occasion I was walking up the back of a farm (Kaimai ranges - West side) in a gully had finger of bush with a small stream running through it that hadn't been clear felled for farming so was part of the native ..had my bow strapped to the back of my day pack walking up the race getting to the spot I wanted to check out ..walking up the race with the stream on my left getting to the top of the rise with a 3 metre bank to my right ..the race flattened out somewhat and diverted also to the right ..I clear the bank and boom a red deer hind 80m away feeding on the grass ..I pull back to be out of the deers vision headed to the gully side where a biggish patch of grass was and take off my pack unstrap my bow nocked an arrow snuck around a little to have a look to see if the red deer hind was still there but nothing "shit" so I ranged the bush it was next to 80m it read so even though the wind wasn't in my favour I made my way back on the race stalking ever so slowly and kept ranging that particular bush until I got within 49m then it's head appeared through some really long grass head down feeding 5m to my left of the bush I was ranging drew my bow and waited for it to turn broadside to give me my shot ..no sooner as it turned broadside it spotted me and boom into the native, down the gully and gone ..just 2 more seconds is all I needed to have my shot but not to be and this was all with the wind behind my back
