Thread: Sleeping bag vs quilt

Given that I don't like mummy bags for lack of space and that I always unzip them and sleep under them, it probably makes sense to sleep under an equivalent quilt / fleece blanket or something.

Anybody else do that?

I switched to a down quilt about four years ago.
Only a few weeks ago returned from the US where I walked the Continental Divide Trail, about 120 nights in my tent with a cheap Chinese down quilt and no regrets. Through spring, summer and autumn. In winter I have a really light down sleeping bag that I use along with my down quilt. That layering is really warm but still lighter than most good quality sleeping bags. With the down you need to ensure it is kept dry but the weight savings are well worth it.

Mr Thomas, I’m impressed. Those big 3, north south Continental walks are my dream in a less complicated life.

Yip pretty much do the same. Bag only gets zipped up very rarely.

yup cant stand my feet trapped so sort of a quilt for most bush conditions - what I carry is a old folks commercial hospital blanket - light polar fleece and what it is designed for is to put under oldies - so wet does not come thru - so my bush bed - a good quality sleeping bag but a wide model - opened up and my granny polar fleece under me and the rest over the top -that combined with a wide sleeping bag opened up - a good inflatable mattress and comfy as and feet free - the granny blanket try spotlight - totally recommend if you are like me and cant sleep in a mummy bag

Id be keen to find an nz nylon shell quilt (open sleeping bag) I still carry a cut down movers blanket for emergencies, cheap as, high wool content and rolls up tight.

Quilt all the way. A custom made one for your height and width is close to a bag, so worth getting one done.

I prefer a sleeping bags for one reason and that is when it gets real cold you can’t zip it up and climb into it.
At all other times I have it unzipped and use it like a quilt.
How do you quilt guys get on when it’s really cold and/or when you need to sleep in a bivy bag because it’s real wet and windy?

Quilts arr great if you find sleeping bags uncomfortable. They are also lighter. Quilts come in a range of designs now - sewn or zippered foot box etc. Have straps to keep on the mat. I dont bother - use like a blanket for pup access.

I use Enlightened Equipment in down. I also use a light dry bag liner in the pack so always dry. Saw an NZ company - Kiwi Ultralight Quilts is producing them now!

Keep your sleeping bag, don’t buy a quilt, unzip that sleeping bag and use it like a quilt


When it’s REALLY cold you still have a bag to be warm through the night

Here in lies my only criticism of my Domex Halo.....it doesn't unzip fully small consolation is that the halo is pretty roomy for a mummy style bag but on occasions it would be nice to fully unzip and use like a quilt.
