    !st Hind

I shot my first hind last night, it's my eighth deer and only my first hind. I have been careful on public land to leave the hinds to let the population grow but this hind presented it's self on private land last night so I decided to plug her. Happy with my 300 meter shot and I shared the venison with a good bugger who lets me shoot his land.

He was stoked with the meat, I believe one good turn deserves another so with him letting me shoot his land I was more than happy to share the spoils with him and hes a top bloke too.

    Good stuff well done.
You have to shoot those hinds on public land too tho especially if you are doing some yards in away from the easy spotlighting/thermaling country otherwise its aerial gun ships shooting at best and 1080 at worst to control numbers.

Cheers Guys, body still sore from the carry out but very happy. Tenderloins on the BBQ the last 2 nights so well worth the effort.

good on you...the yearlings and fawns taste better and sure are easier to carry than smelly old stags...enjoy your venison.

You need to target a few more hinds to keep the current population in check. They are also generally the better tasting type than stags. Otherwise we will end up like how the current targeting of tahr has panned out! The females are the breeders - rec hunters will never get too many hinds otherwise you are encouraging WARO to do the job. So on your next hunt, whack some more hinds over for the freezer. Some of the stags will be bigger after the velvet season for the roar if you want antlers.

    To quote from Cam Speedy

"It's important for hunters to understand the need to shoot way, way more females. We don't need more deer. We need to look after the deer we've got and we're not doing that"

"This whole 'don't shoot the hinds thing' is taking us to a dark place. Both ecologically and politically"
