    Stags shot 2026

Cant find one of these threads via the search, but secured a nice velvet sika stag over the weekend. Antlers were all hard besides the last 15mm on the tops.

Looks like his outer tops could of done with another couple of weeks growing, but as long as you are happy with him that's all that matters

agreed! but its meat on the table, and 2inch of fat around the rump on a public land stag is awesome!

Just an FYI, he won't score and won't go in the books if he's soft. In good condition for sure.

Was there no other animals made of meat around? I know we hear it all the time but that would have been a good one to leave, even for a few weeks and go back yourself!

few weeks, someone else may have shot it. saw a bigger one about 1km off, so ill head there in a few weeks if i get the chance to get out. I also dont get out as much as i used to, every month or two these days so take what i can get! not like i took the head and left the rest.. the rump streaks we had last night with half thre fat removed were AMAZING!!

So you know where there's a bigger one, you're not after trophies, but you are going to try and get it?
Why don't you point some youngster toward the big guys and shoot scrubbers if you only want meat?

Im after anything really, if i can feed my family, put a memory on the wall at the same time, then great, If my kids come with me, theyll have an opportunity to bag one, or one of my mates. but i dont need to explain my situation. I hunt, I remove pests, I keep a trophy and I feed my family and friends. I think this is explanation enough to not start a flame war keep it green! Ive let plenty go in the past!

You missed the first part of the question, a lot of people dream of taking an animal of that class and thats including me, so to shoot it in velvet and post it up as the first stag of 2026 when you were after meat is just a bit rude. I do hope that you didnt leave other animals to take that one instead.

Nope, first animal i saw, only saw other animals the following day. Velvet's curing now and yes, it is all hard minus the last 10mm off the tops, and will get euro mounted and put up on the wall. Ive gotten myself a good nippon hard antler, and a good manchurian hard antler sika already shoulder mounted, this is a first velvet one for me so im pretty happy.

Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.
