    Stewart island

    Hey there all
Just back from Stewart island, had a great time ,five days in all and itching to go back again next year
Looking for a block that’s good for fishing from a tinny as well as hunting this time as a couple of the guys are keen as to fish , any recommendations would be appreciated.

Most of the Eastern coast blocks have sheltered access to the sea. Have been to several over the years and the fishing was superb as long as you had a tinny.

Last time I was a Chew Tobacco there were paua at the south end of the beach. Only a couple of hundred yards fom the hut.
That was twenty years ago though.
The Maori blocks have got very expensive now.

It’s been a fair old while since I have been down there but lords river / little Kuri / tikakotahi were good fishing out of a tinny - pick your weather though and have a very reliable motor ! dived little kuri good cray. Fishing in Patterson inlet was ok too - from Abrams bay Hapuatuna blocks most points held cod and trumpeter speared moki too. Found a few crays as well in the inlet snorkeling.

Went down end of March and had Hapuatuna down to South West arm.

Easy Cod fishing nice and close to the shore, paua were abundant but be aware the limit in the inlet is 8 not 10. Few lads went of the Southland limit thinking it was 10 but got stung by fisheries.

Close blocks are more likely to get a visit from DoC, Cops and Fisheries FYI

Isn't Hapatuna block in the marine reserve, fishing only at the ends of the block?
(at least it was when I was last there)

Give Ian at Aurora Charters a call for transport, boat hire etc.

Book either Chew Tabacco or Port Adventure blocks.
