    Tree bark peeled off question

I just got back from a walk in the kaimais and I came across an area up in the tops that a large amount of the trees had their bark chewed off

The chewing Was mainly low but up to about head height
This was the type of tree mainly chewed

I don't have a photo of the chewing sadly but I can tell you the teeth size is too big for a rat and by the amount it'd have to be a big animal

What on earth done it? It's the first time iv seen it

I noticed large bits of bark eaten off silver beech up the lake last time i was there.
I put it down to the drought last summer.

    Smart Arse

Often see new shoots eaten off fallen beech by deer but not usually bark of growing beech.

There was plenty of feed around and this was fresh chewing like the bark was tasty and only in a specific area like it was a bedding down area

    My thoughts are
1 possum (but the teeth were abit big)
2 deer but why eat bark?
3 goat because they can climb trees when necacary and stand tall on their back legs

The gouges looked like what hares do to newly planted trees except vertical
And were obviously done to remove the bark, which wasn't in a pile under the trees

Area was hotsprings road katikati right up the top of the hill before the east west track meets the Tauhua or something similar to that

Could be feral or released goats as I said before, but could also be deer...a lot of animals eat bark from trees going into winter to obtain nutrients that they need, or because it is the time of year that the nutrients are available. Had it been Pukatea they were stripping, they may have been getting their morphine fix.

I have seen deer in the Pureroa ranges chewing the bark off the trees along a road edge. cant figure it out especially when they are standing on a grass edge.
Next time im in there I will get some pics of the results as there is shit loads of it in this particular area.
