some of these buggers have not really helped you at all western side well where ?? how does one get in there ?? I would continue with original plan and hunt the Waipapa area there are deer in there for sure - dont bother going any further down the valley
Place gets thrashed!!! always multiple vehicles in the car park!!! well known to the "urban Hunter" from the bigger city's that likes to ride Quad bikes!!
yes true the main valley does get thrashed - but that Waipapa area receives little attention since those urban cowboys to bloody lazy to get off their butt and walk aways in - they want to spot an easy deer off the quad and they are not their generally ( once in blue moon ya may get lucky ) but get off butt be prepared to fly camp and have a good look around that Waipapa and Mangatiti streams and you will find animals - have done two trips into Mangatiti for a dozen deer each trip- okay we flew in but a fit hunter could get into the upper Mangatiti clearings in say 3-4 hours - the Waipapa itself the bottom end would be rarely hunted - well worth a look
been a while since ive hunted that area. get of the beaten track. barry has given good pointers. id have to imagine its got busier. guess i was luckhy. the few times i went i saw deer on the main tracks. culled lots n 1080 as well over the years. lotsa hidden camps n sniper spots in there. just gotta spend the time exploring. theres heaps of places to explore, even for me who gets lost pretty easily. follow the ridge lines, generally following old fencelines
The Waipapa gets thrashed the most now, I have tried hunting it 4x time in the last 12 months and there has been party's in there already every time, doesn't matter if you are middle of the week or weekend... ITS BUSY!!..... you can get a bike into the bottom of thw Waipapa, the tracks not the best but can be done with ease. Last time there, i ran into blokes from Hamilton, Rotorua, Wellington. It surprised me how well known and popular it is!!!
hey thanks for the heads up - has been a little while since we flew into Mangatiti - maybe one should just take more time and drive to Ruahines - or National park - both once ones learns where have good numbers - there are a lot of hunters out there now
There are more humans per sq/km in Godzone than ever before, even though hunting might be less PC than in earlier years, there is still more folks out in the hills.they just got to go " somewhere", unfortunately the days of not another living soul within miles, are getting fewer and fewer. More people, more cars no matter where you are.

Some twat has been releasing Sika down there as of late.
Plenty of Fallow around if you can find some grass for them.
Reds too , but they're very spooky these days.
Move slow , Hunt the sunny faces in the afternoons.
The deer down there seem to sleep in.
Nice place to grow up!
What years as I was working on kopia station which back in the day bordered the Riamaki society land in the early eighties and am now in the makakahi.
Hard case as never any deer around just pigs back in the day.
