Thread: US hunter killed by Cape Buffalo

MSN just ran a story about a US hunter killed by a charging Cape Buffalo in Africa. Sad, and not all that uncommon. The photo that accompanied the article showed a hunter with a semi-auto shotgun engaging an aerial target. There was no reference to it being the deceased, just a man with a gun. This is far from the first time I have seen irrelevant photos used to 'puff' a story. Today's news media have no conscience or knowledge!

Almost every year one or two hunters or PH's get nailed by Cape Buff, somtimes with tragic consequences. Not known as Dangerous Game for fun. Not every charging bull is a wounded animal. The Texan in the story above was hit in an unprovoked charge from what I learnt. He was hunting and maybe the hunting group had unknowingly penetrated the Buff's safe zone and it took exception. For a large animal they are deadly quick. I have seen a bedded bull jump up into a run in literally the blink of an eye.

Unrelated but watched an Aussie bow hunter getting false charged by a buffalo (not sure if those are Cape buffalo or not) on YouTube or instagram the other day. Pretty impressive to see. He just kept hiding behind trees and yelling at the thing until it gave up.
They’re not small and probably seem even bigger when they’re having a go at you

Ah yep - it was NT - Yeah it didn’t look happy, when they lower their head and stare down at you - I’d be wishing I wasn’t hunting with a bow at that point

the other one they have in NT is Banteng dont know much about those seem to be another breed of water buffalo

I read this only a day or so ago.
And interestingly it was done by an animal that hadn't even been shot yet. Just plain cranky and why it's called dangerous game hunting and also why some like the biggest rifle they can fire properly.
Once these type of animals get there dance up they are very hard to stop.
So something that can damage a lot instantly either on the first shot, or in the case of a whoops, when they are charging

Isnt it funny. We think its sad. Its ok for the human to hunt the animal but not ok if its the other way round.

Lions take most of the Cape Buff that get killed. They are always following Buff which keeps Buff always moving. Quite usual when tracking Buff to see fresh Lion tracks too.
Buff don't really hunt people as such but can certainly react dangerously to percieved threats. Polar and Grizzly Bear, Tigers, Lions and sometimes Leopards will hunt humans in certain circumstances.

All death is sad.im sure many others feel the same way I do about the taking of a life and give thanks to the animal for providing our family with sustenance. A hunter dies doing something he loved is great... But he still no longer there for his family so that is sad. Nothing funny about it at all.

And I guess that's why they are called 'dangerous game' in both noun and verb form

If I won power all I’d want to hunt a Cape buffalo. The reason being would be for the contest. Hunting something that could do the same to you back, we just don’t get that kind of competition with our animals here. Just a bit more even, not completely even but a bit more so.
