Its a bloody clever one to stand up on its back legs like that
Not sure where did you get it an not the x spot just the forest park etc
Looks sort of like a whitetail. But I'm going with a fallow
Yes it is rather grey looking but that long tail.....
Natatal where did you shoot it..
It does have a red nose......could it be?
Whitetail
I'm pretty sure that's a rusa
This one was shot here on our property in Pyes Pa.
I took down a Fallow earlier this year, also on our paddocks, but that one had the distinct brown with white spots.
The photos crappy mate, I would say it's a fallow just in a different stage of moult and different colour phase maybe. They come in a variety of colours
Got a better photo of the head?
Hmm the best I can do. Took him out with a neck shot at 150mtrs. Attachment 43865
seems to have a rather long nose for a fallow....red fallow hybrid ha ha
If it was taken in the area of the Tauranga/Rotorua Direct road it will be a fallow. There are a couple of other breeds in the area that we don't want the Dept of Corruption to know about but this chap doesn't look like one of those. I hear driver's stories of fallow deer bouncing across the road in front of their vehicles at all hours of the day. VERY tasty venison fro the BBQ too. Bloody well done!!!
LATER:
I have changed my mind!!! I think you're onto it Gibo. Suggest that you get Bruce Banwell's book on NZ Deer species out of the library & check off the various differing points. But it certainly could be a red/fallow hybrid or a hybrid of one of the unmentionables that I have heard of.
Let's all know when you've narrowed it down. I'd like to know.
Weight would be a good indicator ,fallow around 25kg normally
Spot on with area just 15kms out of Tauranga. Used to be a Rusa farm just 5kms up the road.
We see two types here, this one, with them being taller and a lot more stocky than the other which are the distinct Fallows look, and of course smaller.
I came face to face with a Fallow stag, at least 8 pointer, early this year just after the roar.
He was only 8-10mtr away, I don't know who was more surprised, but we stood looking at each other for some time, and he didn't bolt off, just casually walked off the track and into the bush.
I would have been in trouble if had decided to charge, No rifle, would have had to just run and find a tree to hide behind.
He was the smaller of the 2 that I have seen over the past week, and he would have been 35 to 40kg.
He just happened to be at the right place at the wrong time for him. It was 8.45pm with low light, in a cleared paddock at 150mtr over open iron sights.
I had the advantage of wind direction and elevation with long grass for cover.
Fairly sure fallow and reds don't/can cross breed.
Yeah the fallow get a decent size

I was looking at the length of nose but could be your picture angle
Attachment 43867
Yeah Gibo looks a lot like that, but certainly NO white spots, which was the reason for the post !!
The ears are wrong for a Rusa unless it's a hybrid.
The other unmentionable which I will mention now that you've divulged the rusa heritage is: SIKA!!!!!!! from a similar source.
Don't tell the Dept of Constipation,eh!!!!!!
WHAT type of deer? why it's a dead one of course.
This fallow didn't have distinct spots as it was slightly wet and ruffled up. Attachment 43871
Here in the uk I've seen fallow of all colours in the same heard. White, Grey, spotty. Never herd of them crossing with red though.
Bugger just got another call out for tomorrow so rum in take has had to stop:pissed off:
Rusa
Looks fallow to me but then I have never seen a Rusa.
Got a photo of the rump patch?
Ok the verdict is in, its a yearling Rusa. Our local Hunter from the area confirms it.
I should have asked him in the first place.
