that opens some real possibilitys for a roar trip get dropped off on the road into Mangapohatu and cross onto the main divide between the Ruakituri and the Hopuruahine - come back thru the ridge between the Ongaonga and Tapawawera streams -out to road at Taitamakora - likely no heads as such but there will be deer and that high Te Urewera country is lovely to hunt - goblin forest can be very open - some of the deer in there will not have seen a hunter

The Manuoha was always good for dumb deer like this – but it is a long way to carry venison.

Re the lake – the good news at that time of the year is there is plenty of passive surveillance with the number of people about. Your vehicle is generally fine parked at Hopuruahine and Mokau if you are coming in via Ruatahuna. The bad news about that time of the year is the number of people about. I used to carry a Maori flag and parked in all sorts of places from Maungapohatu, Minganui, top of Whakatane etc and never once had a problem with that flag on the dash, so there’s a good tip.

Back to the lake, long before the track was a great walk you could shoot deer from most of the hut’s doorsteps or camping spots – you simply wouldn’t dream of doing it now.

My father spent considerable time on that road building the bridges

yes long carry out but a good area to take some new roar hunters - if you camped last few nights around the Ongaonga stream area thats not a big carry out and the Hopuruahine quite nice travelling
