Being back at work wasn't ideal last week especially looking out the windows at work with perfect weather but it held for Friday and I hadn't taken the vixen out for a walk for ages since having a couple of 6mm CM's that I'm loving using.
Away at 0600 for an hour drive then a 45 min walk up the hill. The track isn't that nice at the moment with ankle deep mud in a couple of places but with a couple of stream crossing's a quick wash of the boot's was had.
Was slow going to start with only 1 wallaby shot while making my way to my first shooting possie.
90m shot
I ended up shooting 8 from the first spot from 140m to 243m.
All shooting here was prone resting over my pack.
A few wallaby's enjoying the sun before a 52gr Targex headed their way.
After about an hour and a half it was time to move on to another spot. A bit of a climb then a drop down of about 400m found me at the spot I'd found last year which produced quite a few wallaby's and so it proved once again at this time of year!
I found a good size snow tussock to rest my pack over and was able to shoot kneeling or standing from it in a 90 degree arce across to the 2 faces full of scattered scrub in which ended up producing 20 wallaby's ranging from just over 100m to 223m.
I had 35 rounds with me with only 2 misses and 1 wallaby needing a second shot. I found with the .222 and 52gr Targex that once I got to and beyond 200m the kills weren't as quick often taking 5-15 seconds even with a good chest shot and I had a couple of runners with closer shots as well but I am used to the 108gr ELD-M's hammering them!
I pretty much kept going from one face to the other and back again as I'd shoot a wallaby on one face glass the other and find one that came out to a clear patch in the sun and shot that one and so on. I managed to shoot 2 wallaby's that where within 1m of each other at just over 100m. I shot the first one and its mate didn't even flinch so got that one as well and I had one hop out and stop in front of one I'd shot earlier, I guess it thought it was sleeping so he joined his mate too.
And it's surprising how often they'll pop out after a few minutes of no shooting or just appear on one facing while I'm shooting wallaby's on the other face.
I would have only spent just under an hour at this spot before things went quiet which left me on 29 for the morning and I like round numbers so I was happy as to get one to make it 30 on my climb back up to the ridge top and from there it was back down the other side to the lower ridge dodging and weaving through and around the gorse where the track back to the hilux starts and back through the mud to end a fantastic morning on the roo's.
The Sako after a good mornings work!
