Doon Period 1 , Holy shit are we happy boys!!!
First time drawing a ballot - Doon 2nd period. As soon as I’m over covid I’d better start training!

Our first time drawing too (second attempt). Catseye third period - a 4 man group. First time hunting Wapiti... first time in Fiordland. Epic! All advice welcome!
Doon pretty easy block to get around you'd trip to the tops and back daily no problems. Some cool spots to camp down by the lake, it is outside the wilderness area though and I've seen plenty of boats and tents in the there with guys trying their luck before the ballot periods start.
Edit to add: there is plenty of country in the block however and you'd do well to get right into the back of the block where the weekend warriors have probably not had a chance to stir things up. Hear plenty of stags going bananas in there third period last year down near the lake though
Dark river. First time. The training starts tomorrow and the beers stops after Christmas! :-)
That will annoy the shit outta me finding footprints from the day before…
And you’re saying weekend hunters could be there till March 19th?
Stillwater. First time.
Looks like it could be good for some pack rafting
Edith 2nd Period, Frothing!!
Cheers Dusty - bloody stoked!
Only the core wilderness area blocks are closed to hunting before the ballot, Doon would be one of the more accessible blocks outside that area so it does get hunted pretty regularly. That said there's a lot of land in there and your chances will be a lot higher with more time in there and the possibility of stags making some noise
We've made our regular donation, no joy for us. Was excited about the potential of the 6 person block option this year, interested to know how many groups of 6 were successful?
2 from 8 attempts, guess that's about the norm. At least I can have a guilt free Summer!
I’ve drawn billy burn 3rd period. I can’t wait!
No joy for our group of six, 3 from 5 now. Odds do favour the 2or 4 groups. More chances in the main draw and the in the final sweep probably more likely as well. We’re still keen on a SI trip, will have to look back over old episodes of RSHC for some inspiration.
Drew Whitewater P2. First successful ballot in 5 years (although that is after drawing Edith each of the 3 prior years) pumped to get back in there!
Cheers for the run down and advice! We thinking a good base camp down by Doon river mouth - gives us a good base for 1-2 day missions.
Is the river edges walkable? Also planning to hire 2 kayaks for around base camp , shoot over to the hut if rain gets insane
George River, 1st Period. Got a team of 6, taken 3 years to get a block, I'm stoked. Been doing core/cardio circuits at the gym twice a week since June and still not liking the look of those hills but I'm sure going to have a crack at them.
Got wild natives 3rd period. 2 out of about 11 or 12 I think odds. Looking forward to it.
I've got wapiti river 4th period. Had the block before, not so sure about 4th period. Funnily enough only put in 20 options and this was my last pick
Does FWF normally send out contact details of the other party we block share with?
Yes but probably not untill January
Any tools or items you wish you had of taken? Small spade to dig water drainage… folding saw for around camp..?
Wee zoom round wapiti country today :)

Hell of an inspiration you guys are THC. Your 2015 Lower Glaisnock episode was extremely informative and definitely still the one to beat. - iv watched the full episode at least 6 times in the last 2 weeks haha. Probably watch it a few more times beforehand. Perfect way to showcase what it’s all about. Big ups to you and the Bouys!
Would be a great block if it didn't get cleanest out of bulls this year . I heard 9 big bulls were taken out of there before 3rd period we had it this year. Then we shot one red. I wonder how the blocks are going to withstand the amount of more hunters in them this coming ballot 310 hunters supposedly this year and going to be 600 hunters next year . I think it's going to be detrimental to the heard . Already have too many Muppets shooting them too young .

I reckon every party should be checked as they go in and they're allowed two bullets per party.
Quality photos of a close encounter are much more satisfying than an average set of antlers - and a shit load easier to carry!
lol brus...
thats not how to correct the situation.... this will lead to atleast 1 of those bullets just wounding said bulls- with hunter wishing had more round to tag out on number 2 ;)
edumcation is key- an possibly unfortunatley Cost is the key... all favouring FWF not the Hunter :)
Intrested to know what it the costs are for a chopper for certain blocks if anyone has quotes
Light river 1st period
2700 Milford helicopters squirrel Milford sound
3750 fiordland helicopters 500 from te Anau
Both into light river
