Maybe it had to be in by the 4th? Done mine as soon as it opened, so it seems like a wee while.
Had to be in by 31st Jan, wont be far away, fukin itching to find out I tell ya
Drawn on 12th
You Kiwi's will be lucky to get a block with all those mongrel Aussie's balloting
Not this year
I've got 2 or 3 lots of Kiwi's coming for a hunt here so that will use up most of my spare time
No offence meant mate, but if I want the Game Animal Council (GAC) to do one thing, it is to stop that happening in future.
A lot of Aussies come over and use a guide for their first trip and then go hell for leather every other ballot. I do not have half the rights here in Oz for hunting, as you Aussies or any foriegners do in NZ.
You can come over and shoot a trophy bull or any of our game animals and take it out of NZ for the cost of a flight. There is no public hunting here in Oz that offers the same oppourtunity that I am aware of?
I should not miss out on hunting my back yard to any non-resident. Our policies are so stupid and free to abuse, they need to change.
Thats very incorrect, if you've spent time in WA and Qld you can't hunt public because no one can, so do as we do and door knock for private access. WA is the tightest state in Aus for gun laws so anything there is hard.
I've hunted in SA, Vic, and Qld and the laws are the same as far as I'm aware, in that we have no special treatment. Mind you Vic is the only state that allows public land hunting, though NSW will again in the next few months. NSW has the monster fallow and red heads so I'm keen for this to happen. Thats the same whether you're from here or anywhere in the world and if you need to buy a permit to able to hunt in a certain spot in Aus you can guarantee we need the same one.
Its not like the US where they try to stop people from the next state even from hunting, its fair game if you put in the hard yards to find places to go.
Edit - in fact, Vic changed its laws in sept 2012 to make it easier for internationals to hunt in Victoria to promote the industry to the world
What is incorrect exactly BH? All of NZ has public hunting opportunities. Dont really care about anywhere else as I am happy to pay if I have to. I am also talking about a unique, balloted period and area. So I fail to see how I am incorrect in what I initially said and want as a NZer regarding my hunting/user rights.
I will never hunt NSW. I reside in QLD. Not saying I want to hunt here either. Ridiculous laws and opportunity out-weigh the desire and reward IMO.
I do not want to miss out on a limited yearly ballot for areas I live and play in, because a non-resident won it, over me. It needs to be stopped. Period.
It is not just my opinion. Thar are unique in the SH and if you want to hunt them in NZ you should pay to have the privilage as a non-reident as I would expect to, going to any other country to hunt and will do so, happily.
Have to admit, well put Dave'o
I know a guide from here in Oz that was shown the ropes by a mate back on the coast. He now guides paying hunters from Oz in the ballot area. No liability of any sort or any ACC payed.:pissed off: Yet it is technically legal.
I think what he ment R93 was in Vic any Kiwi can hunt public land same as an Aussie and take what is shot home to NZ same we can do in reverse
Yes mainly Sambar but plenty of fallow for meat. Trophy fallow are a lot harder to get as they get a real hammering in Vic
R93 I agree with you about the Aussie doing the guiding but not your keep it all for us attitude. Especially when I hear about the summer time bomb ups that Kiwis have on the tahr herds
We might have to agree to disagree on that
We could have the same attitude about our jobs but that wouldn't be helpful either
Cheers Ackley
Most people I encounter here, have the kiwis shouldn't have jobs before Aussies, attitude. TBF, I actually agree, for the most part.
I do not give a rats ass about Victoria I will never hunt there. My whole country can be hunted and exploited by non residents for free. That's is my point.
Sorry but there is no way I should miss out on a ballot to hunt in my country to a non resident. I along with a number of other hunters that are actually west coasters will be doing everything in our power to have it addressed as well.
I have no objections to the rest of the year. I agree on the bomb ups, especially in the ballot areas. People are just stupid thinking it has to be done as the bull to nanny ratio is severely buggered at the moment.
Most non residents I have come across also have no idea on trophy assessment. (neither have a lot of NZers to be fair) I have seen a pile of 12 heads taken by 3 hunters last year, where the largest would struggle to reach 11" Just plain ignorant and selfish.
All non residents should be guided and pay a trophy fee if they take a bull during the ballot period. It will stop random bomb ups and undersize animals being shot that is currently ruining a resource for those that can make a living off them.
6 ballots in and I drew nothing! !!!! Looks like the drive down to haast on the 17th of March for me
How everyone else get on?

This is that age-old argument of commerce/tourism $ vs lifestyle for resident citizens. I support R93 wholeheartedly and want this BS to be addressed by the GAC.
We have areas in NZ which are not hunted intensely and animal numbers become concerning, so DoC's response us to aerial drop 1080 and claim it as possum control. Why not communicate with stakeholders and "sell" the culling opportunities to foreigners and commercial guides instead?
I will pre-empt responses... "Because the country is probably rough, steep and hard to hunt". So? Why should guided tourists get the easy (especially balloted) areas instead?
Kiwis first in kiwi land!
Brother got Perverse Creek 3rd Period so that's me sorted unless I get better news in the mail tomorrow...
You can draw Barlow 3Rd to haha

Don't even think I had it on my list? Way I figure it, I could only have Mahitahi, Poerua or Shelter Hollow. I had Perverse Creek as my 1st choice and Bubble Creek #2. Brother had Bubble Creek as his first choice & Perverse 2nd choice...

Apart from one success I have only heard of rejection letters today.
Hoping the majority of successful ballots arrive in the mail tomorrow.

Dave, while I hold with your opinion on the guided hunts in the ballot area, I do wonder how objecting to international hunters taking a punt in our ballot blocks is any different to the attitude of certain locals in Whirinaki ...

Surely we're not that hypocritical?
FFS. I have nothing against anyone hunting anywhere.
I do have an issue with a ballot for an area I live and play being flooded with overseas applications and preventing Kiwi hunters a fair whack at hunting their back yard. It is literally flooded with Australian applicants.
I haven't painted any signs.
Maybe if a few more people had their favourite hunting areas balloted and missed out to overseas hunters all the time they would view it differently.
Try and hunt in Canada or the Us as a foreigner. They have it right.
We do it all wrong in NZ. We literally give away access and rights to our animals in NZ when we can't really afford to. Our guiding fraternity is allowed to undercut each other killing any value in the industry. We are simply to cheap compared to the rest of the world.
If the Aussies had a ballot system I bet ya a thousand they would not allow applications from overseas.
Especially from Kiwis.

4th year in a row I have personally missed out on the ballot. Got my letter this morning.
The system is fucked.
Still have a couple mates that have not heard yet. Still may get a second chance.

We have several ballots such as RIDGE roar and Hog Deer ballot, kiwis can and do apply.
Just stop fucking whining, you guys have some of the best hunting in the world 24/7 and if someone wants to come across from another country for a week to have a crack why not let them. Someone shouldnt not be allowed to hunt something because they live in another place.
A part of me wishes that only Victorian's could enter the hog deer ballot let alone other states or internationals but that would be hypocritical because I do believe anyone should be allowed to hunt any animal without having to pay huge dollars so I don't complain.
And whats the difference anyway, if I got a spot in the ballot this year you'd hate on me, but if the missus and I moved over end of the year and I got it next year that'd be fine?
I know a lot of cunts of Australian's I'd rather see get a hog deer ballot spot well after some of the kiwis I know. I don't care where someone is from I'd just rather see a good bloke get a crack over a fuck wit (which didnt happen this year. I know a bloke who got drawn on the hoggies and if he takes one it'll be the first legal deer he's ever shot - would much rather see a good kiwi in that spot)
Because foreign hunters fucking flood the ballot preventing kiwis like me a fair go. Fuck!! How many times do I have to say it?
It is also peak trophy season in those areas.
Where can I have a better than 50% chance of harvesting a trophy on public land in Australia?
Foreigners should have to pay more than 20 bucks to prevent me a chance at hunting where I fucking live.
Whining maybe. I don't really care what it sounds like to you because you don't factor in or in any way contribute to my ties, to my back country.
Again, I also don't give a flying fuck what I can and can't do where, I will never go.
Have a think about it. How would you like to miss out every year for 4-5 years to a kiwi or the like hunting your favourite spots?
Quite happy for that to happen are ya? Bullshit!!!

Foreign hunters who do not contribute to our (NZ) resource via trophy fee, hunting permit or other tax kinda takes the piss out of the egalitarian ideal NZ was created in.
Freedom for all, to pursue all pursuits, regardless of rank, class or caste is a kiwi birthright not an auction.
Why is the area balloted anyway? Too much pressure?
Got the Lake Abel site for period 4. Would welcome any information on the block, as will be first time after tahr.
Can't wait!
I shoulda been a fisherman cause I always get bites...
How would I like to miss out 4 out of 5 years on the ballot? I've been in the hog deer ballot here for the last 10 years and have never been drawn, some blokes go their whole lives without being drawn. Odds are equal no matter who you are or where you're from. You dont have to contribute anything to my state or country to have equal rights to have a crack for them as I do.
You cant use your example and then say you dont give a fuck about mine, they're exactly the same, the only difference being it is a lot easier still to draw a tahr spot.
I'm sure you've shot plenty of big tahr, but you're right fuck the poor cunts from overseas that's never even seen one. I'll probably never get a chance to shoot one Hoggie in my lifetime, but I'm not whining about it, yeh it pisses me off but its just how it is so you deal with it.
they can hunt them the rest of the year.
