Wet Jacket 1080 Operation delayed due to lack of rats!

Since they have a fair idea of the extremely low rat population, is there any data on the stoat population? In addition, since the effectiveness of 1080 against stoats relies on secondary poisoning via rats, surely this is an ideal case to consider alternatives to 1080. Although it is a big area, maybe a program similar to the Native Island project would be a good start https://goodnature.co.nz/blogs/news/native-island That would at least give some idea of the stoat population. This is also a very special area that may hold remnants of the only moose herd in the southern hemisphere.

Interesting read so they will wait until there are more rats to control before the drop so they can kill more stoats??

Yep rat populations are boom and bust, they get hammered by 1080 then bounce back. This just means they are going to wait till later in the boom cycle. Might mean one less 1080 drop as it will dampen the rat numbers again

Spent A LOT of time at top of Wet Jacket. Never saw a rat or a stoat. Interesting read tho.
