Mate you'll love it here. I could not decide what calibre was best for NZ hunting so I've got a few rifles... I'd go for something bigger than .243 and smaller than 300 Win mag, if I was you. Long action for down south short action for up north.

There is only one answer to this thread.

Buy all of them, and more than one of each calibre and model.

This is New Zealand, there's simply no reason not to :-)

I really dont understand the 308/708 north island 270-3006 south island mentality.
Both have plenty of bush hunting both have plenty of flats/slips regen open country.

A little of fuel in this fire…
I am a 7mm Rem Mag myself and i have shot goats, fallow and reds here in the south from 10 - 300mts, ammo available everywhere, at least in my region and a good range of projectiles weight.

But where's the fun in that? My bank account hates me already so not a problem.

The actual shipping of firearms into NZ is fairly simple, but when you start adding everything up its just not worth it unless your guns are something really special (which mine are not). Also I will be staying with family to start with so shipping my stuff is just extra agro. So I thought I would sell it all and buy one nice deer rifle. Then I will start squirreling money away to buy another varmint gun and shotgun.

I have been over loads of times and my other halves familly are all there. Ive done a fair bit of hunting on private land already but Im looking forward to getting out on some public land.

I think 308 will be a good starting point and I can buy more calibres as time goes by and I have sold the kids and maybe a kidney..

Hi hawkish , if you have any good scopes bring them along, I brought my rifles with me, there's alot of choice overhere, but check out prices before you leave.

Yeah that is a pretty good idea. Scopes aren't the cheapest here, might pay to bring your glass along with you. No restrictions or permits needed

Cheers Taff, I have already been doing a load of reasearch and anything thats more pricey over there I will buy before I leave. I was looking the other day and Jesus a decent pair of boots is expensive over there! I think I'll be bringing spares!

Im only selling the guns themselves, scopes and all of my other gear will be coming with me.
