what gets you up and keeps you up

plan to go for a hunt this morning in the same spot i shot my 1st sika last weekend .
After having a hard and long day at work yesterday and knowing i had a big game of rugby today that includes a bus trip i set my alarm for 5am.
with a restless night sleep with the thoughts of seeing a deer keeping me up ,my alarm goes of and i get up very tired tired to keep quite not to wake the missus i just jumped back in to bed and fell asleep.just puting it out ther .
any hunting trips you missed or trips you made by not going back to sleep
also any special tips on geting up and staying up when the thrill of hunt is just not enough?

Petree there is something primal about the thrill of the hunt that should have seen your senses keenly honed and awake. As to the question "what gets you up and keeps you up" I am just waiting for someone else to say what is on my mind as I am far to polite to say!

I have woken at 4:30 a.m. every morning for decades. Don,t need an alarm. I have never lost enthusiasm for getting out of bed to go hunting but there have certainly been many times when I have cancelled plans to go shoot a deer up the back of the farm because of some piss weak excuse like it was raining (I don't like getting wet - don't mind being wet but just don't enjoy the process of getting that way)

Here's a tip if you finding getting out for a hunt isn't enough motivation in itself. Plan to go out with a mate and set a time. In most cases niether of you will want to be the useless bastard that slept in.

I used to go whitebaiting with my brother-in-law. One Saturday I crashed into bed at 3am after finishing work and couldn't be bothered getting up at 4:30am to meet up with him and head to the river. So he headed off with my nephew and they came back with 2x 20l pails full!

Oh well, at least we had whitebait for my wedding along with salmon from another brother-in-law. RIP both you good buggers.

Many years ago, cousin and I were to meet at 5am to go for a goat shoot. Problem was that night we had a party at our place and it was 3am when I thought it was best to get a bit of sleep. He rang at 5.30am to see how far away I was.
A few years ago I was to get up at 3am to travel to Taupo to meet some mates to go for a weekend hunt. Neighbour next door is an arrogant fuck and likes to get home at 9-10pm on a Friday and have a few drinks. The music seems to go straight through our walls and it was 2am before I got to sleep. Slept in till 3.30am and hit the road. By the time I got to Taupo late and no time for a feed we got onto SH5 and into the bush. I was knackered for the walk in.

Put the alarm clock in a kerosene tin and place carefully under the bunk level with hunting mates ear. You can be assured he will be the first up and he will light the fire. His nerves will be that frazzeled by the time he hunts down the offending clock he wont go back to sleep again. Those big old alarm clocks with the bells on top were the best, you would swear in that first few seconds you were about to be run over by a train. I wouldnt guarantee you get a cup of tea in bed though unless its over you
