I hunt with a 270, 770 model, my son, son in law and a mate all use the model Remingtom 770 270 caliber and have successful hunts with no hassels in x3 years. I havn't seen any trouble and have kept it tidy and clean whenever I finish. It's been treated bad with waterlogging, dirt, fog and even snow, it has kept working and I can't tell how many animals it's dispatched. Some fine long range shots as well.
I have owned and used a number of other models and have settled very happily on this one. Thank you very much.
I was bought up on the saying, "A poor tradesman blames his tools".............

I have never shot a 770 but the Model 7 (particularly) or 700 are great rifles ... almost legendary. Don't forget to tell him to invest in his scope as well ... whatever he spends on his rifle, he should spend on his optics and a decent neoprene sling like the Niggeloh GmbH brand. ATB ... gunzrrr
