Was taught back splices and eye splices many moons ago at lineman's school. Never forgotten.
Another interesting one we were taught was the monkeys fist.

Never toss a hemp rope monkeys fist into water ( if you want to undo it one day).

The navy guys would be more accurate than that, wouldn't they?

Its a really nice knot and you dont have to be Albert Einstein to build it either.

    I've just re-discovered this thread.

A while back I made some videos describing useful knots that I use. In case anybody is interested here are the links:

As you may have guessed, I am very interested in practical knots. Best wishes from Nelson.

Round turn and two half hitches for attaching to something.
    Bowline for loops.
    Sheet bend for joining ropes
For attaching things to my pack etc. I have a couple of Sea to Summit accessory straps which have an adjustable hook / loop, weigh almost nothing and are rated to 150kg, which have worked pretty well.

Bowline & the trucker's hitch. That’s all I need for everything

    Bloody good thread.
I can't add too much that hasn't been said but use a few of the knots mentioned here.

I Agree with Coote about the specialty boating companies for cheap and high quality line. Just have to find them online and look at their catalogues for your needs. They tend to have load ratings and specifics like UV resistance.

This thread now has at least a couple knots for basically anything you would need to do with a rope but instead of learning them all, maybe figure out what categories of knot you might need.
Some people have offered categories but for me I think about:
    - Knots which can be undone after it's been loaded
    - Knots which won't come undone
    - Something for securing a line to an anchor
    - Something for joining ropes together
    etc

Just figure out where your lacking and learn one for that.

I use builders string for things where stretch is ok. guy lines etc. It's so cheap and I don't feel bad cutting it.

For high quality ropes at short lengths you can check out Aspiring Safety, an NZ store that does cheaper offcuts and things.

    This knife-belt situation is genius.
I'll definitely be copying you on this one.

I've seen the alkythene pipe sheath before but not so tidy.
