308, that bracken up the shirt got my son-in-law a good fire going above the snow line a few years ago when he started hunting. He said he listened as we talked around the fire. I must have been rambling on about the tricks my dad taught me. When he came back from that trip he was stoked to have been warm.
I'm going to add one more item to my list - dental floss!
That stuff makes a great tool, from cleaning your teeth, sewing bottons back on or repairing the sleeping bag, doubled up can make an emergency pull through for the rifle, makes neat snares, and you can tie the plastic bags shut when full of venison.
But most of all, I've personally sewn two mates up that got injured, one in the Motu and the other up the Godley valley in the South Island. Both badly ripped. The doctor at the last hospital left the stitches there and my mate still shows them off as a badge of pride!
