Thread: Where and how do you carry your knife while hunting?

I am interested to know where and how you carry your knife while hunting. For example, is it on a belt around your waist, is it in a pocket or a day pack or do you have it reversed on your pack strap ready for quick extraction like Sly and Arnie in the movies (I have never come across anyone that does this)?

I wear mine on a belt around my waist.

Lost a few off my belt pushing through thick bush and monkey scrub, so now in my pocket or pack.

I normally carry my big one on my belt and have a fold-out buck (which gets the most use) in my pack. Also have a cheap shitter in my little med-pack/survival-pack thing which is always in my backpack.

I shoot bunnies/possums once or twice a week so I always like to have a big knife handy as if the buggers aren't dead I don't fancy shooting a 17HMR at the ground in front of me. Easier to stand & stab.

stabbing a possum? thats a new one. why not use the taranaki two step?

oh and in my day pack. unless im not carrying a daypack then on my belt

Pig hunting on my belt every time. Deer I have a mercator in my pouch/pocket and my other knife in my day pack. This caught me out last time when I grabbed the bugger by the ear and it tried to get up. Wish I had a propper size knife on my belt then. I am looking at nice carry knives to buy when I get to the states. Want something with about a 4 inch blade and a nice sheath so no chance of getting lost.

In the mean time I am going to have a crack at making a leather sheath for one of my bahco knives. I can afford to loose ten of them to every one $150 knife!!

After I lost my hunting knife at poronui mistakenly unclipped my knife belt instead of waist strap on my pack while getting ready to hop onto the back of the helisika ute, didn't realise I had dropped it on the ground until I got part way to oamaru hut I was lucky that i had my good skinning knife in my pack, so now my knives stay in my hunting bag till I have to use it so I know it ain't going to get dropped.

Why would you "stab" a possum? They'll die quicker with a swift boot on the head. Less chance of the f&*kers running up your arm too!

If they're not quite dead I stand on them, pull my knife out of its sheath and stab them in the head. What's wrong with that? Quick and painless. Been doing it to rabbits and possums since I was a kid and haven't had one get a hold of me.

I carry my Buck Vanguard synthetic on my belt on the right hand side of my right hip, really quick and easy to bring into action if the situation dictates, its always on my belt and then that way i full well know exactly where it is.

I'd rather like to get my hands on a Svord bird and trout knife and use some a spike from a fallow spiker ive got for the handle.

A decent knife on my belt. Mostly the first thing you do with a knife is cut a throat. I like it accessable and sharp. I don't want to be grovelling around in my pack.
Also there's a mercator in my belt pack as a spare. And I've got a small one on my pack waist band too. That's 'cos when I've got my pack on my knife belt is usually in the pack.

No worries, just wondering. I grew up catching them too, run possum lines and off for a few years while I was at school/uni. Can't recall using a knife on one yet, apart from skinning them of course! Great fun shooting the old coons.

In my pack, less shit on the outside the better...............
I used to use a vege knife for everything, lost it after 10 yrs and now use a folder. Those big bowie types are a joke, unless you are pig hunting.

For rabbits etc I have a small knife in a sheath that carries in my front pocket but when after anything else I have one of my other knives on my hunting belt but situated just behind my hip so that it is not likely to be grabed by any scrub I push through. In a fall it is well away from the femoral artery as I heard of a hunter once who died from a knife cut in a fall where the knife was just in front of his hip bone.
I carry more than one knife when out and about with a rifle as the pocket knife I made is ALWAYS in my pocket with either my rabbit knifeor belt knife with a second in my day pack. Always make my sheath's as the deep pouch type so the possibility of losing them is much reduced.
