Random thought for the weekend:
If you could live in any town or city in New Zealand with the main intention of getting into the outdoors and hunting as much as you can for a year or two, where would you live (don't say the bush....)? Feel free to justify your answer :-)
Top of the South Island seems to have it all. Trout fishing, decent enough saltwater fishing and good hunting.
Wanganui we miss all the crap weather dosent take long to drive anywhere to do it hahaa

access to ruhainies and tararua rangers, central location for sea fishing on both coasts aswel as as fresh water fishing all around.
1.5hr to Wellys
3hr to Taupo
2hr to Napier
3hr to np
Hokitika....which is gonna happen sooner than later, wifey is from Hari Hari and we're over there regularly. We've been house hunting for a year now and just waiting for the right property to come up. Hokitika has everything and is only 45mins to HH. Deer, surf casting etc etc.

Anywhere on the South Island if its not in Christchurch or South of Geraldine
The West Coast for sure. Look up WAMS and focus on the West Coast: the entire area is bathed from top to bottom (with a few tiny exceptions) in the light green colour denoting public land. Step 10 metres off SH6 and 99% of the time you are in public land. The New DoC hunting permit system means 30 seconds of box ticking and you are good to go for a year's unimpeded hunting. And then there's all those river mouths.......
Gisborne.
Fertile soils.big pigs.big deer.great fishing
Multiple species of deer.wild cattle.goats.pheasants,turkeys,ducks,big dark possums,
Trout fishing.
Small population surrounded by critters in every direction.

Opotiki but make sure up on the hill above the town why Opotiki flood prone why cheap housing ( bad gang reputation but likely not deserved)- gate way to great hunting and top fishing- leave South Island fishing for dead especially game fishing and snapper --
Wanganui great fishing with a boat of the coast and hunting inland cheap housing again buy a house well above the town ( flooding )

Theres no hunting area in either island thats more than a few hours travel from anywhere. Find a house you like in an area that suits you for work and social purposes , and trave from there to hunt

Born and lived in Marlborough most of my life.
I've traveled NZ extensively looking around, called Tauranga home for a couple years (loved the harbour and all the fishing), a year in Hokitika and I still visit there regularly (love everything there) but I love the Marlborough Sounds more than anywhere.
Actually, it's a shit of a place with nothing going for it so all you guys should avoid here ;)
Geraldine is now where I call home and love it... But I still miss Taumarunui

Probably in the Wanaka region. Spent a lot of time there as a kid staying with aunt & uncle and still get there occasionally. The lake & mountains are a big drawcard to me.
Another option would be inland off the Kaikoura coast area.

Wash your mouth out. It never stops raining on the Wet Coast. Rates are too high rivers are alway flooded there are no Deer here. Stay away. Your better off moving north. Have you considered AucklandQuote:

For the North island i reckon we have it pretty good here in Taupo. Tauranga is only 2 hours away, Ruapehu 1 hour 20mins, Kaimanawas 25mins its just so central. For me i do more hunting and flyfishing then ocean fishing so its perfect. I can also drive from here to Wellington in about 4 hours, have a sleep on the ferry and then be hunting in the south island by lunch time the next day.
If I moved south the 2 spots that spin my wheels would be Nelson region and Wanaka. Both have alot of hunting etc within a short distance.
West coast South Island has to be considered something special for people that are attracted to the mindset you have to have before living there. They are not supported by the ideology of the rest of the country. CASH is king here. You have to experience the uncomfortable feeling standing at a money feeding a money machine wads of notes, so that you can buy something that requires a bank transfer. Haast for example is 150km from the nearest bank. Real people that don't tolerate bullshit. Something special that if you don't live there, you wouldn't understand. Whitebait season about to start and brings in in all the bad stuff from outside unfortunately
West Coast sth Island.

My soon to be son-in-law shot 6000 goats in a single season between rotations on their forest block at Wairoa. Certainly a good place to live for anyone wanting to eat goat meat.Quote:

If I chose South island it would be Geraldine. I can shoot wallabies and rabbits anytime. Fallow or reds. I'm not fit enough to hunt Tahr or chammy but the general region is nice. Not too far from Wanaka or Queenstown.
If I was in the North Island I would like to live in Ohope (my old haunt - I wish I still had my house on Ocean road)
Central to what I love doing but not isolated. I like the climate. I like the aspect with the housing on the hill. Not as cold as Fairlie. Hospital in Timaru. Housing relatively affordable. Will never do it. Nice dream. Visit there a few times a year to stock up with Barkers mint sauce.Quote:
