Went for my first pig hunt in 4 years today with a cousin just to see what it really is all about. Got a little 15lb pig but unfortunately the dogs killed it and also a 100lb boat which the dogs ripped the shit outta then it slipped away never to be seen again. Just wondering what you guys views are on pig hunting with dogs. The main reasons I'm not a massive fan are

* unlike hunting with a riffle you cant choose what size or sex ur gonna kill or wound as the dogs dont give a shite

* it looks a bit inhumane the dogs ripping into the pigs like they do

* the dogs constantly get hurt and arnt care for or treated as well as say a duck dog

Interested to know your thoughts.
Ps: im not a greenie tree hugger thats campaigning to stop pig hunting and dont bother replying if your gonna judge anybodys opinion.

i think pig hunting with packs of dogs isnt really hunting, the dogs do all the work while the human walks in and kills the pig once its to tired to fight or run, and as you say they dont care weather its a little piglet or a big old boar everything gets it. plus those dogs scare the shit out of everything for miles making hunting hard for anyone else around them. but each to their own i prefer using my skills stalking animals.

I do not hunt pigs with a knife over dogs but my old man did and across the years I have known a good few that did. Using dogs in the pursuit of game animals has been something that humans have done for millennia and I admire anyone who perpetuates historical practices. It is also the case that I have seen pig hunters spend fortunes at vets taking care of their dogs. It is not just a doddle up to a pig to stick it, keeping up with the dogs is hard work that requires a high level of fitness and if the pig decides to head into gorse then there is a degree of difficulty attached that most would shy away from.

3 of my good mates are dog followers(I call then that just to wind them up)
Its not my cup of tea but i definitely see the attraction.
For them it is the adrenaline rush of running into the bail and the satisfaction of training up a pack of dogs to do what they were ment to.
Lets not forget dogs are pack animals and have hunted this way for themselves for 1000s of years.
Not all dogs get ripped and a good pack will ignore the small pigs.

Wounding an animal with bow or rifle is no different if the animal gets away. I reckon a lot more animals would suffer less and recover from a tussle with dogs, than a wound from a projectile.
As pointed out before, good dogs will hunt as trained.

My cobber keeps my pork rations topped up so I am all for it. I love wild pork.
Dogs do not fuck around with their prey the way cats do either.
I wanted to shoot one of my wife's cats watching it with a skink yesterday.
I didn't because I like her cooking and various other skills.😊

You will never be a pig hunter, as you don't weigh pigs by the kilo...always makes me laugh at competitions when they weigh the pigs on metric scales and then convert it and write it up in pounds.

Although I'd never do it myself I did enjoy doing it with my mates. Back when I could run and shit

I wouldn't say there is no skill in it, if I remember correctly I don't think the dogs did all the work. I'm pretty sure he worked out where the pigs might be, how the wind was and lead the dogs to the right place to work with the wind. Whatever he done it always worked as I don't think there were many times we never got a pig.

Oh and my thoughts as I've been with lots of mates with pig dogs and my sister has them too- depends on the place and situation kinda.
Big boars are seriously rough and rowdy things and can easily charge, chew you up and spit you out in shreds if a big one really wanted to!
I've heard sooo many tales of how a fella has been saved by his pig dogs when he's got up in a tricky situation in a bush with a pig, misfired shots, tripped over while being charged and a boar has come running at them for the dogs to distract them, and really sink their teeth into them.

Although most of my mates have trained up pig dogs and they are out there as fantastic trackers with their great smell, also double as protection against big ones; but I've never heard of people letting the dogs do all the work? Ya'll need to be getting your asses in there if that's the case, because a pig can rip off a dog's leg too if you're just watching and not calling them off for a shot. But like I said depends on the place and the situation, it's just logical that sometimes you can't get in there before the fight between dog and pig is over.

If a dog is trained right and you call them off if they're after a pig you don't want - like a sow when you want a boar - then that takes skill of course (for training) and would make the experience a lot better. You'd have to train them properly and not half-assed to obey calls.

My thoughts
