    Is 10x Enough?

I'm thinking of getting a Sightron SIII 3.5-10x scope for hunting out to about 700ish yards. Is it enough? Ideally I'd like a 3-12x but there aren't any decent ones within my price range of max $1000NZD. A 4-16x might be ok but I would prefer 3x as the lowest setting. Also I would like Mil turrets and Mil reticle but beggars can't be choosers. Any other suggestions?

    Cheers

Vortex Viper PST maybe? But it is a 4-16... Comes in mil/mil. http://www.eurooptic.com/vortex-vipe...br-1-mrad.aspx

    or this: https://theopticzone.com/products-pa...mil-dot-matte/

Pushing your $ limit though... Its mil/mil

Really you need to look through a few scopes at targets at 700 to decide if 10x is enough magnification. If its a hunting rifle that you are more likely to shoot at 200-300 99% of the time then a 10x is plenty, but if its going to be used at longer ranges more often than not, then a higher mag scope would be a better option. A long range rig generally doesn't make for a good bush rifle, so having a 3 bottom end compared to a 4 shouldn't be too much of a concern...
If it's not a first round hit you need to practice more

Everything is a trade of a big scope dosen't make for a good bush rifle and a small scope isn't perfect at distance. I have shot deer at 700 yard with a 10X scope but it wasn't what I would call ideal 14X or 20x would have made the job alot easier. You need to make your mind up what size best fits most of your shooting and the other hunting you do will have to be a trade of.

Thanks for the options guys. I like the idea of the Bushnell Claw but I don't want an Illuminated reticle. What are your thoughts on 4.5x as a minimum? is it low enough for bush hunting? The reason I ask is Mark 4's 4.5x14 with Target turrets instead of M1 turrets is cheap.

    They're not "real" Mk4s, incidentally.

But that range is fine for an "all-rounder" and they should work fine.

Ive got one and Im thinking of getting rid of it. Not becasue of issues with the scope though(its rather me not the scope). Ive walked mine out to 900y and back with no issues and I havent found a problem with the bottom power of 4.5 in the bush that much either

Glass was very good, tracked fine, just 18 moa per turn on little dials had very hard to define clicks.....was a few years ago so may be different now (4.5x14 SII BS SF)

Looks like the 4.4-14x44 may have changed they now have 20 minutes per revolution with 60 minutes total and 12.5 long with 3.9 inches eye relief

Might have had 20....been a while, loads of eyereleif...3.9 might even be on the short side....had to be mounted as far forward as I could then added to my recoil pad to get it right.....but that was with DNZ mounts and they have no step forward on the Mod 7's .... good scope over all bar the very very fine clicks. Not that cheap and being relitivley light the tube will not be that thick so make sure rings are lapped or go insert type rings with lighter scopes

What do you mean? What is the difference between real Mark 4's and the one I linked? Is it just the turrets being target style rather then Tactical?

I was also thinking of getting the VX3 version of the same and getting the custom shop to put a target elevation turret and finger adjust windage turret but I think cost works out about the same. Once a mildot reticle is added.

Striker. How much are you chasing for yours?

Look at the weight of them compared to say the 4.5-14x50 Mk4 LR/T, much much lighter. I suspect they're basically a VX-III 4.5-14x40LR with target turrets and a black objective ring.

I see what you mean. 6oz (168g) lighter than the M1 Turret version. Although it does have a 50mm Objective lens vs the 40mm of the target version.

Compare it with a 50mm VXIII and see how it stacks up in weight, I guess. They're also significantly cheaper than the cheapest "other" Mk4's. By a long margin.
