@csmiffy for many years a Carl Gustaf model 9000 in 22-250 was the only rifle I used to shoot deer, pigs, goats, wallabies, hares and rabbits, with a few possums thrown in for good measure. Although I still have that rifle it now sports a 24" Pacnor 1:12" twist barrel rather than the original 60 cm 1:14" factory barrel which I shot out.
That rifle has been joined by two other 22-250s in the safe, one is a Sauer 202 1:14" and the other is a Schultz and Larsen Victory 1:10" twist. My wife also has a Schultz and Larsen Classic DL 22-250 with a 1:10" twist barrel.
Over that years I have shot 100 plus deer with the 22-250 however all but one of them have been neck or head shot, the one Red hind I chest shot while on the move went 15 odd yards before dying. The projectiles I used were either Speer 55 grain SP (#1047) or 55 grain Sierra Game Kings (#1365) and several deer were shot at ranges of between 250 and 350 yards on still evenings.
There is no doubt that there have been huge improvements in heavier projectiles but I still use 55 grain pills, either the Sierra GK or the bonded Norma Oryx.
The 22-250 also excels at longer range hare and rabbit annihilation, I have shot several at ranges beyond 400 metres with the odd one beyond 450 metres. I am sure 500 metres plus is possible but where I shoot my ranges are limited to just beyond 450 metres.
