I would be talking to @mudgripz about the one he mentioned....Wooden stocked ones seemed to have the better quality control (far less duds...) As for the scope if you ever look to upgrade, value for money teh AO Nikko Mount masters or the Nikko Airkings are a) really good, and B) not expensive.Well worth considering.

I have one. The machining finish is pretty rough on it but it shoots as well as you would expect most good quality 22's to shoot. A good knock around option.

I've had my JW15 for 17 years. Put close to 8000 rnds through it. Used to shoot possums, pigs and rabbits on properties where I grew up. They are industrial and clunky but accurate. Mine sill shoots fine after so many rounds.

They remind me of the AK-47 of the bolt action world. Mass produced, simple, not the greatest finish, but is reliable.

After getting a few replies and a few PM's, I arranged to meet @mudgripz at his house as he seemed to have what I was looking for.

Got to his house around 12am, and what a nice guy he is. Brought me inside, grabbed the Norinco he had mentioned earlier in the thread, and talked me through everything in detail about how the rifle was modified and setup. Gave me advice on what ammo it likes and even talked about getting out for a shoot sometime. He said I could ring him about any setup issues or any advice, which you wouldn't get buying new in a shop.

Big thanks Mudgripz and everyone for you input, really happy with the wee rifle.

He even threw in half a box of the ammo and a bore snake.

Really contemplating cutting mine to 16" now eh.

Just need a JW15 set up clinic and shoot now

Can’t remember if mine is 15” or 16”. Bloody handy in suv with DPT suppressor on it. Best move I ever made.

I have been thinking of it too. With a muzzle forward suppressor it gets a but fiddly

Like others have said they can be a bit rough around the edges but they bloody shoot well. Well mine does anyway with Winchester subs.

That sounds like @mudgripz ....did you ask about his Maxtochs? If you ever need a torch, he is also your man.

Funny thing is I've done 8-10 of these little modded sharpshooters for myself over the years - and the whole lot have disappeared!! My ones!! Not really done for other people, but they'll just ask or I'll hear of someone setting up new and.... oh oh .. another one gone!!

There is no functional reason to have a 22LR barrel beyond 16". Powder has well burned in 22s by 12-14" depending on loads - someone might have data on this.

I keep some longer barrels - for aesthetic reasons with some models, to retain classic models intact, or maintain unmodified $$ value of a more expensive make. But for hunters/workers - they will all be trimmed to 16". The chop and recrown seems overall to improve accuracy a fraction - likely due to better crowning. Advantage with 16" hunters is lightness and manoevrability - just so easy to handle in and out of truck/quad etc when short carbine length.

JW15 is modelled on the Brno model 1. It benefits from polishing work etc - QC work that should have been done in the factory. Seems to bring out that Brno DNA. Cheap wee rifles but often with surprisingly good barrels. Of 15 or so bench tested only one could not shoot sub 1" groups at 50m - a crappy Polytech version. Of the modded ones almost all under 0.7", and most sub 0.5" at best. That's good. Gadgetman's little JW shoots 0.3" groups at 50m

@mudgripz from my memory you are correct. 16" barrel for a 22rf was the magic number.
There was some data posted here after I made a comment about a very shortened (legal I may add) and silenced 22wmr.
The figures suggested that mostly among the rimfires it wasn't as massive a velocity drop even back to 12"

Re-JW15, if the exit-hole is dead-center in the barrel, it should be fine(where the projectile exits).Worth checking, though I've only seen one that wasnt. Mine is more accurate than any 10/22 I've ever seen. After a bit of polishing of bolt and receiver, or a lot of use, they get quite smooth. (DONT use a dremel). Check that the mag/mags feed smoothly, my experience is, they either do or dont. Mine is sensitive to the action-screw tightness, dont know about others. I rate them as the best bang for your buck, .22-wise, and there are Vids out there, if you want to play/improve them a bit yourself

Throw away the mags and use CZ 452 10-shot mags. no jams then.

Mine has about 8,000s rounds through it. Smooth and cheap.
I've polished the bolt, worked the trigger, smoothed the feed ramp and it works well.

I found I had extract issues at about 5000 rds and it turned out it that all it needed was a new spring on the bolt for the extractor and ejector. Solved!
