308 Over barrel or end of barrel suppressor?

Hi All,
Only been hunting couple years now, got myself a .308 Kimber SS HUNTER 84m last year, now looking to add a suppressor - I do must hunting in the tops, don't really know enough about either suppressor option to pick.
Any help, pros or cons would be much appreciated.

IMO overbarrel 100%. Cant go too wrong with any on the market. DpT, Hardy or Gunworks probably most popular.

And if you have a number of similar calibre rifles with different barrel profiles but same thread the same muzzle forward can will be more versatile. Less fiddly than changing barrel bushings.

I have both and overbarrel is still my preference
I only went muzzle forward in my short barrelled kimber Montana to avoid having to cut the stock
Overbarrel look better on longer barrels and it's volume without the annoyance of it being longer forward when carrying
Dpt get my vote too over barrel with one additional baffle
You can get more baffles if you go down the subsonic rabbit hole later

I prefer overbarrel suppressors for better weight distribution, handling and ruggedness. With one or two notable exceptions, most suppressors will do the job.

Make sure your rifle is threaded to your specific suppressor.

Personally, I have found Sonic to be excellent value for money.

Overbarrel on a hunting rig, keep it short. Also the Kimber having a #1contour barrel you probably dont want too much hanging off the front of it. You may find that you will need to chop your barrel back a bit to get enough meat to turn a thread onto it as I dont think any NZ suppresor company do a thread that will suit a 1# contour, the few I have seen are running an adapter to allow a shoulder for the suppresor to snug up against

I’ve used the ase SL5i for a few years now. I’m very impressed how good it is. 4” long muzzle forward. Stainless steel and very solid. Weighs the same as the hardy gen 5 can. About same performance. I run it a lot on a 16” 308 doing 10 round strings. I’ve done quite a bit with the hardy one too and it works good. I have to use the ase on the 308 though as the stock comes to the end of the barrel. Works good on a .270 aswell.

Have a mate using the adapter you mention. He mounted adapter permantly in the suppressor as its only used on the one rifle

For my soon to be shortened to 18" 260 Tikka - DPT overbarrel

For my Marlin 3030 Dark (16") and my Howa 300 BLK (soon to be 12") - Oceania Defence QD Muzzle Forward

I think muzzle forward are great if it's a short barrel.

So forget the comments about desecrating a Sako, its a TOOL...TELL ME what YOU THINK is best overbarrel (No cuts on a factory 20”) for 308 Finnlight SS...?

your in Auckland...no question..DPT....take rifle down there and get it done....oh better courier it or wait till lockdown over...trying to breakout of Auckland with rifle in wagon could be...problimatic.

I had a DPT on my 260 finnlight, but I haven't tried any other brands so can't say how they compare.

@7mm06 I had a gunworks on mine for a few years, which was good. I changed to a DPT because they are a bit shorter & lighter. My impression is that the DPT is a little quieter and reduces recoil a little better, but take this with a grain of salt as there is zero science to back this up; “confirmation bias” is no doubt involved

Over the barrel DPT. Very efficient and very important....... very light. I have 3 and cant fault them.

Have had both overbarrel and muzzle forward with no issues or any real difference in sound suppression.

I will shortly have a bob each way on this. There is a DPT muzzle forward suppressor on my .308 Bergara Break open single shot. These are very short and threaded so I could just order one on the inter web and screw it on (not any more though). My M700 .308 is currently having an over barrel DPT suppressor fitted. Over time some of my other .30 and .303 rifles may get threaded for the muzzle forward suppressor. For a serious hunting rifle I would go over barrel but for the short and not so serious hunting rifles a muzzle froward could be considered especially if you want to swap it between rifles easily.

iv got the mk1 overbarrel and muzz forward DPTs and I just saw the MK2 and iv gotta say I like that size more for not popping up too much in the scope at low maginification

Over barrel all the way mate. Had both pros and cons for both, but definatley a well balanced over barrel you cant go wrong

@7mm06 get a couple extra baffles for it too, you won’t ever look back, I should have done it earlier!

Thanks guys , just getting fitted for DPT over-barrel, looking forward to getting it back next week and trying it out..

Went overbarrel DPT modular in the end...no barrel cut. 8 rounds at the range to adjust PoI and all is good. Tho' I forgot to remove the suppressor cover and it got a bit 'soft' at one end, but it was too long anyway...🤣 quick trim and its still a bit long but can roll it back under...and small squares of tape on the riflestock for when a new muzzle tape block on the DPT is needed to prevent crap entering...
