You may wish to think of your first rifle as a trainer rifle for other rifles later on. While it is great to think about a best rifle for whatever use you may want to use it for you may wish to select something that is easy to learn to shoot with plenty of ammo available. Also something that is easy to handload for with plentiful components. To me the 7mm Rem mag ticks few of these boxes. I would tend towards the .308 Win (sorry @Micky Duck) but I am probably biased. no need to apologize to me.....I rather fond of the .308......if didnt own a .270 it was going to be 308 or 30/06 of that there was never a doubt .
