I run a 18inch tikka 7mm08 with a vx6 3-18x44 scope.
Works for me from 10meters out to 600meters on fallow and goats.
Managed a decent red stag at 450meters, all using the 162gr amax, still got 300ish stashed away.

I'm constantly amazed at the potency of modern (last 120 odd years) cartridges.
I use 243s with 18.5 inch barrels and find the length perfect with a suppressor (basically factory length)
708 will be more devastating for the same barrel length and will do better if you decide to go shorter
I have a 12.5inch 300blk and it's portability even with a massive suppressor is a major plus when carrying it
Forget resale value and just build the tool you need
How far do those red dot sights work out to @MSL
Totally agree a Montana to 16 to 18”would be mint.

My go to bush/river/slips set up is a 7mm08, 18.5 with a dpt. ( it's relatively quiet too )
I run 150 Federal Hotcors on deer ( work extremely well out to 350, max for me )
Also run the cheaper 140PPU on goats and pigs. Good basic budget bullet IMO.
I've had excellent results to date and yet to try the 120 grainers but I hear good things.
Capable little cartridge and hot on the heals of my 270, so much so I have to do a double take.
Here's a link you might find interesting and made me move to 18.5.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I was fortunate enough to buy a 7mm08 of the yellow website for a great price. Stay tuned for some more questions as I seek advice around over barrel suppressors and the like! Cheers!
I bought a weatherby vanguard 2. Took it for its first walk today and was fortunate to drop a pig at just under 200metres. Very happy with the rifle, certainly a model that suits me. Cheers.
good work, nice cal to start with the 7-08
