    Anschutz 1532 .222 Rem

I was out spotlighting with an old school friend, and towards the end of the night he asked me "what can I do with a .222 that won't shoot? I can't hit the side of a shed with it."

    "What is it?"

"An Anschutz". Now I'm interested. "Happy to have a look at it for you".

I took it home, spent three consecutive nights and a power of Sweets solvent to create some very pretty pools of light blue goo. I'm not sure it had ever been cleaned, or cleaned properly.

I threw an old scope on it and tried some Remington factory 50gn SPs. Neat little groups around 1" at 100m. I rang my friend to let him know and asked how mush he wanted for it. "$350". Sold! This is what it was like:

I stripped off the worn and scratched finish, and steamed out a nasty deep dent in the top of the comb. Refinished with Truoil.

Hand loading with 40gn v-maxes and it really started to shine:

    More to come.

I shot the rifle like that for a while, but was never really happy with the drop in the butt and the low comb. I found a second hand stock locally which has a higher comb and gives much better cheek support. I also picked up a second hand Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40:

I while ago I picked up a nice second hand Swarovski Habicht 3-9x36, but with the existing bases and Weaver rings I couldn't get it far back enough. I changed out the alloy bases for some Warne steel bases which enabled it all to come together nicely.

Toddled out to my range, bore sighted to the top of the mobile phone tower on the ridge ~25km to the south, pinned up a target and took a shot at 30m. Needs to come left.

Walked back to my bench, guessed 24 clicks left and sent three shots onto paper at the higher aim point. Easiest scope zeroing ever.

Marcus, what is your load detail for the 40s.

Those 54 action .222s often are good buying here. Unfortunately I am already covered with a A series 700 with a maddco tube and don’t use .222 much these days.

Cant beat a short action .222, and those older rifles are the best. My Sako will consistently shoot under half an inch at 100, especially when the young fella is behind it. The V-Max's seem to shoot really well in them on furry game, but anything with hair needs something less explosive - at least thats what i found.

a point if you are ever after a cheaper .222 that shoots - if you see a Remington 788 come up have a serious look- they are tack holers and a good one I will stick my kneck out here and say they will out shoot many so called top rifles like sako - another beauty is the Tikka LSA 55 they really performed - I still have my Remington 700 BDL in .222 its a tack holer but heavier and let down by being a 308 action with a magazine block for 222 but will take 7 all up with one in spout so was good for goat culling - thats where the Tikka LA 55 and to a degree the 788 was let down lack of magazine capacity - but the Sako Vixen is still the go to for a work .222 just so nice an action - The later AV is also great - the Anshutz well I doubt many who like rifles doubt their pedigree

The load is 19.5gn AR2207 with a 40gn v-max or Nosler Varmageddon. It's a load that has shot well in a range of .222s I've developed loads for, and is one I often use as a test load to see if a .222 will shoot.

The load is very mild and not particularly quick, but perfect for the Annie. Because it's so light and trim it's a terrific rifle for wandering around whistle foxes or potting the odd bunny (if you can find one). I don't see the need to hotrod loads for this particular rifle; I have others that I can push harder to shoot flatter, and given the Mod54 action is a rear locker probably don't want to push it hard anyway.

Speaking of the action it is smoooooooooth, and the trigger is terrific.its one of those rifles that many look upon with disdain because it's a rear locker, but if you handle it and shoot it you just know. I love it.

Yep Rem700s, Rem788s, the older LSA and M55 Tikkas, and of course L461 and A1 Sakos in .222 all had (still have?) a huge following here in Aus. I owned a 788 in .222 at one stage, might put together a thread on it at some stage if I can ferret out some photos.

For long enough my only 2 centerfires were a sporter m96 and a 788 222 pretty much had all my bases covered. Fuk know why there's so many in the safe now
