I am no expert on these matters but have been told by 2 different cops that I required one.
Maybe they were being careful.
Fines are pretty big if they wanted to make an issue.
For $178 NZ I'd just give it up if that happened. If they are going to worry about a piece of wood then you could say a scope or rings is part of a gun too.
Just go for it, no dramas with mine either. They probably only open it up cause it's a wood product anyway.
