    Cerakote

Looking at cerakoting a bolt (just the bolt) for a stainless action. The bolt is not entirely stainless and wear to the existing finish means that it can develop surface rust if neglected. I can be hard on gear. I want to mitigate this.

Anyone done this and had any issues whatsoever?

Used duracoat with a single use Preval sprayer worked out awesome.

I rate the dura coat also but I doubt it would be hard wearing enough on the bolt. Almost certainly you want to have something heat cured and I believe cerakote makes a micro slick product for exactly what @gimp is talking about.

Shooting from the hip here, but nitriding might be something to look at. I know it gets gone to actions and creates a hardened and durable outer surface. Unsure if it is ok on a bolt- probably should be as race crankshafts and rotating components are often nitrided.

Is there anyone that will do it?

Think you have to send it to some outfit in Auckland for nitriding. Try Murf in Blenheim for Ceracoat.

What I have done in the past is used a heat-cure 'ceramic' laced paint in a spray can on a bolt that the coating had worn off. Same issue, where the wear was, was where it started rusting...

The spray can pretty closely matched the original coating and I could touch up at will when it needed it. I used a heat gun gently like to cure the paint. Should be able to get a matching or closely matching paint if that's the path you go down?

My reasoning for this was the original coating was supposed to be as hard as diamonds but it basically wore straight off the high-contact areas like bolt handle, raceway contact points and lugs and also until it wore down the thing was as tight as in the action. I could put on a couple of thinner coats and check it wasn't binding with the can. It was no worse or better than the original coating, can't recall what the name was now. One of the propriety fancy coatings though.

I had these guys Nitride some parts for me, turned out great.
They were very helpful on the phone and more than happy to do gun parts, so would suggest giving them a call and see what there thoughts are.

You will want to clarify you want the black oxide nitriding. Regular nitriding does very little for corrosion. We nitride hundreds of kilos a month both ways and the difference is obvious.
