A 6.5 and a 6.8
You have good taste sir. An Oberndorf Mauser "original sporting rifle" in 6.5x47, kurz action. Manufactured 1923, I got it in a completely stuffed state and no bolt . Rebuilt by Dave Ward. 3.1 Kgs.
Do you find the mauser action too noisy? I have a cz527 and I wonder if the action is too loud for bush hunting.

I wouldn't say so, no.
It's more clunky. But run it fast and it's still very slick. I'd say the sound of the round popping up out of the mag on a Tikka/Howa/whatever is probably a bit louder if you go slow.
@timattalon, close, 6.5 Grendel.
I tend to leave the action completely open. With a round under the extractor, it'll slide back and flick the round out into the tussock when pointed upwards.
And I rarely rely on the safety with that particular rifle. I use the set triggger on it and it has actually gone off before when the set trigger is engaged and I've flicked the safety off.
It's a bit of a faff when the animal you're lining up on ducks into cover then you have to de-cock, un-set, re-cock, apply safety, wait for the animal to re-appear, remove safety, re-set, fire. Easier to just keep the chamber empty until ready to shoot.
@Micky Duck you, or some other old school hunter, should teach these boys how to hunt safely on half cocked, so they don't go off half locked!
No need, you won't be invited.

well mate I have hunted for over 55 years I was a mountain Safety Instructor for 35 years and some muppet tells me that story and I will tell any one run dont go hunting with that joker
Man people are brave on the internet . .. . I have been lucky enough to have hunted with Pommy, including in some very thick scrub, and can safely say he is one of the most disciplined guys I have seen in my hunting years. Despite having a huge number of years of "experience" on him I am pleased to say I learnt a couple of things off him on our hunt together.
Jesus christ. Hes clearly stating he doesnt trust it so he hunts with nothing in the chamber, did you even read the full post before going off on a tangent?
OK in the interests of a POLITE ,conversation with potential knowledge shareing to be gained...
having used a lovely Bruno fox 222 (yip the one that has been through at least 2 other forum members hands in last few years) with awesome set trigger....there are pros and cons to them.
that particular rifle had two triggers...one could be fired like normal trigger, semi heavy pull weight but ok for off hand quick shot...or you depressed set trigger to make the other one now a "hair trigger" needing something like half a pound to make it go bang.
fine n dandy if shot is taken.. but as said pain in arse if its not. carefully unload and unset trigger..then carry on.
so DONT set trigger unless 99% sure ready to make it go bang...on steady rest, lined up,breathing under control,Xhairs no longer waving around like flag pole...set and bang pretty much straight away.
IF rifle is prone to popping out round left under extractor..consider the modern practise of chambered round and safety catch applied TRIGGER NOT set.... for carrying when game is close or expected to be seen soon...
you have a system that works for you..... at end of day we hope we all do it safely.
I do know what you mean about tenderhooks unloading if trigger is set...the way the older model70s 3 position safety worked had huge merit...bolt could be worked in first position...
my wee zastava 223 mini mauser has a safety catch...its never been used LOL... didnt use the one on its big brother in .308 either. the one on HOWA 1500 sometimes gets used when lining up from steady rest and waiting for last bit of settling etc
the rem 700 doesnt have one at all.
This is my Dinosaur. The original 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser. Yes, designed by Mauser about 130 years ago and still dong the business.
The 6.5x55 is possible the finest calibre ever invented and is the only calibre needed for all New Zealand big game hunting.
This particular rifle is Schultz and Larsen, possibly the finest rifle ever built. Note the fine hand checkered walnut stock and rose bud tip, beautiful! The thing I like about the S&L is the ability to change the barrel at any modern calibre you like, this is because the breech is inside the barrel, not in the receiver. Which means I could up-date to something modern like, .303 or 30-06.
That shiny piece to steel hanging out of it is call the BOLT. It probably has at least 50% more steel in it than a Tikka T3 bolt, because that bolt is designed to take any of the magnum calibres.
This will crack you up, this is a PUSH FEED ACTION! This is the rifle on which I base my safety concerns after having changed from my Alpine 30-06 which had a sporterized Mauser 98 action with a full length extractor, giving controlled feed. But I forgive the S&L that short coming because it has a palm swell like a woman's breast. However, I would never lend this push feed rifle to an inexperienced hunter. Photos to come from my phone....
It's ok, he's just upset from the other thread and thinks he's seen something here to capitalise on to make up for it. He'll crawl back under his rock in due course.
Rifle is fine. Rifle was intentionally pointed in a safe direction when this happened to test it.
State of the set trigger and safety is irrelevant once the bolt has been opened and round taken out of the chamber.
so I can agree with that.........Im ready to shoot from the time I reach my hunting grounds and are in animal prone areas. my rifle is ALWAYS treated as loaded.....
this highlights difference between an open country hunter and someone who spends a lot of time in thick bush.... open country have time to take pack off, load up etc..in thick bush Im trying to be quiet, keep dog quiet,ID animal, close bolt/cock hammer and fire BEFORE the usually alert animal departs.... I would guess thats usually under 5 seconds from first glimpse of animal.....
two of my hunting rifles dont have a magazine at all.....far too slow to carry them without a round chambered LOL.
come on fellas...keep it civil
Lovely looking furniture on that thing @Hugh Shields.
I have a S&L classic in 6.5 too. I have no safety concerns with it at all. A good push feed is uncomplicated and simple to operate and understand. It's so smooth I have no reason to load it until I’m ready to fire. If there is a delay I apply the safety or eject the round. It has no half cock which is more a blessing than a disadvantage. I detest rifles on half cock. If I miss out on a deer in the bush because of it so be it. As an aside have you seen the price of another barrel for it. You could buy a couple of Tikkas instead.
yes I have always been a bush hunter and hunt with a round in the chamber- before I go hunting after cleaning bolt or a new rifle or having trigger done I always check check the trigger let off - no round in bump bump on butt - thump the butt check check yes safe - but I have used half cock for years and likely wont change
Up to page 3 and no more mausers to look at.
I nearly napped off - had to get up in the ceiling space. Now I'm back down I'll post a pic (after coffee)
I had a look in the back of my safes and found a few hiding, unused, unloved…
A reminder of the days when you found bits cheap and cobbled together rifles which ultimately cost a fair bit!

Haha - I like the comment about costs - that's my story writ large!
Here is another "original sporting rifle". This one an unusual Model B pattern, built as a 7x57 but at some stage of its hard life rebarrelled to 303. Still missing its bolt but I'll get one eventually.
