Thread: Dual purpose 284win advice.

Hey all,

I'm new here. I’m looking to build /buy a dual purpose rifle. The purposes being regular bush hunting and long Range shooting/hunting.
I’m looking to be able to shoot to 700m, more if I’m able.

I’m in favour of the 284 win as the calibre and am after advice on what I should use as a starting point.
I purchased a Tikka M595 in 22-250 with the intention of building this 284, but I’ve decided I like it too much.

There is also the downside to the short action limiting the capacity with the longer projectiles.
This is steering me towards a T3 in 7mm08, modified to take 284win, replacing the magazine and intake with an AI intake and mag.
This seems like a fairly simple cost effective solution.

What are your thought?
What else should I be considering?
Is the SA capacity a real issue?
Should I be looking at building on a mauser action with match barrel etc?

Buy a 7mm rem mag. Use a suppressor and 7mm-08 type loads for bush hunting. Use a brake and full power rounds for long range

Spend all the money you save on getting a high quality scope...

and when you have shot the remmag out or need more speed ream or rebarrel it into a 7 - 375r haha the mighty everything round.

What ebf said but Imho load it as a rem mag. Stout bullets for bush like Barnes interbond etc etc and leave the suppressor at home.
Fragile high bc bullets for long range put suppressor in pack if you want otherwise just use it at tho range .

You can do exactly this, I did it and made a 280Rem

a 7RM will have a good muzzle blast and more recoil and a shorter lifespan.

but a good dose more velosity and in hind sight pushing a 162 amax harder and not having to pay for the gun smith, LA mag and bolt stop I should have gone that way. also the 7RM has a 2 inch longer barrel than the 7mm08 i believe

you also burn more powder and everything that you buy costs more, factory ammo, cases, primers

but that amax goes faster...............

run the ballistics. make your choice

either that or go 260rem with a 140 amax

I have to say I friggen love my 280 tho, the lessend recoil and slightly more compact package is nice and for my likely ranges it has more than enough energy.

a hotly loaded 7mm08 will also nip at the 284 and 280 velositys too. if you wanted to start there and see how it goes for you

Depends on the donar rifle and what's available. I basically have exactly what you're talking about - Tikka M595 rechambered from 7mm08 to .284win.



It has been a great rifle that I used for ''Deer Management'' in the UK for 2 years and have used it a lot for most of my hunting prior to a couple years ago. I'd hate to add up how many deer I've shot with it, but its never let me down once - I'm the weak link, not the rifle.

I really like it because it got a tad more grunt than a 7mm08, but not too much recoil or muzzle blast like a big magnum has.

But you'll need to do some maths to work out if its worth the $. If you can get a secondhand 7mm08 then its not going to cost very much to do...but if you start with a 22.250 then its going to cost a lot.

But as already said, a 7mmRM will do it all a little better, but with a bit more recoil/muzzle blast etc etc...

Just read this over and over until it makes sense, there is over 10yrs of forum discussions and real world experience being expressed in that reply.

You can of course choose not to run a suppressor or muzzle brake and keep the rifle lighter, the dual loads or same powder charge/dual projectile choice is a good idea too and works well.

I would go 7mmRM, tried and proven, can be loaded lighter and you have the extra grunt if you want it, heaps of loading components and factory ammo anywhere.

I run my 7mmRM quite light, 162 A-Max @ 2850fps, and 150 TTSX @ 2950fps, real easy on the shoulder, easy on the rifle, lighter on powder etc.

162A-Max deadly accurate to 600 (as far as I have used them) using 11.25 MOA, the A-Max shoots exactly 1" higher than the TTSX at 110yds in my rifle so it makes switching easy.

my costs for rechambering were 1k for second hand t3 stainless 7mm08 (which included optilocks and a long action mag) but was covered in camo tape and painted......
250 for reamer (not nessary if the smith you use has one)
120 for bolt stop, hard to find also, basically you need someone to make one for you, if you luck out and get a older solid bolt stop rather than the newer skeletonised you can just cut it back to work
and around 120 for the setting back(not needed on the 284) rechamber and marking with 280 rem by mitch maxberry
