Is removing the hand piece really the only thing you need to do in order to sell it as an a-cat? What if you purchase the rilfe and the put on a hand piece at home - is it now an e-cat?

You mean the pistol grip? No, it's still A cat... currently.
Right so they are selling it with out the pistol grip so they have a "clean conscious". Whens that law likely to change?
no it's just a dumb Trade Me rule
E-cat firearms serial numbers are registered on police system as such, it is illegal to use a A-cat firearm in an E-cat configuration.
you cannot just add or remove parts to shift it from A to E. or vice versa. The firearm is either one or the other. (or if an A-cat firearm in and E configuration it is an Illegal A-cat.)
But in a couple of months it WILL cost you a new safe and possibly ecat license fees :x_x:
hopefully they come to their senses, and just make high cap mags an E requirement, so surely they must realise a pistol grip or adjustable stock, or hell even a flash hider, doesnt make any firearm any more dangerous.
anything with mag over 7rnd centerfire or 15 rimfire is E-cat. and done. end of story.
will never happen tho.
All of these things should be classed as an E cat all you need is the 20rnd mag that has been sitting in the draw for the last 20 years to be put in it to make it E cat they are both the same weapon just a bigger mag
We should make it doubly illegal to do things that are already illegal!!
We can get behind the idea all we want, but the new act has already been passed and submitted for assent, come the start of November, even if the police do absolutely nothing there will be a solid portion of the firearms owning population of New Zealand turned into criminals overnight.
quote from a large gun part supplier on a 75 round 7.62 x39 mag "note fitting larger than seven rounds to a semi auto centerfire makes it MSSA "but in the next line "you do not need a licence to purchase any magazine in new zealand "
[QUOTE=30calterry;107189]quote from a large gun part supplier on a 75 round 7.62 x39 mag "note fitting larger than seven rounds to a semi auto centerfire makes it MSSA "but in the next line "you do not need a licence to purchase any magazine in new zealand " so if i didnt hav a licence i could buy a 75 round mag a case a primer some powder and a projectile and some e cat stocks !
shit to tui a fied did it double
30calterrys new gun laws if i was deciding the laws
1. all guns must be keep in a safe to the old e cat standard
2 . any stock can be fitted as long as oal of firearm is over 870mm
3.any mag that was desighed to carry more than 10 shots is e cat
4. you must have a licence to buy any gun related product( skope, mounts, sling etc)
5 tuesdays will now be known as topless tuesday
this will never happen as i would abuse my position of power, max out my expense card and do and say very very very inappropriate things
When you write:
'...................anything with mag over 7rnd centerfire or 15 rimfire is E-cat. and done. end of story.."
be cautious and remember to mention the other bits (there are many but to give you my gist, bayonet attachment:)) before some dimwit says, "Hey my Lee Enfield has a 10 shot centre fire magazine and a bayonet attachment so it must be an E cat!":D
Once again (common sense app engaged) I would suggest the word " Semi Automatic" was left out between the words "Anything" and "with" because we all know what was meant.
Basing things on Magazine size / action type is an easy and simple approach. Forget about the nasty evil mind control bayo lug and or pistol grip thing.
Simple test should be if its semi and you have a big mag in/on or near it and no E cat you are toast
Arguing over semantics of things is point less.
I would argue you are either "Fit and Proper" to hold a firearms licence or you are NOT.
There are not "Degrees" of "fit and properness"
I mean I have A, B and E endorsements, if you think that makes me any more fit and proper than someone with only a Std licence then you are mad.
All it actually means is I had a more thorough background check as part of my application and (most likely) have better security, and it gets inspected every year.
I find it funny that despite all the AR's etc that have been available over the last two years or so, with a pistol grip, and the amount of A cat holders taking the piss out if the E cat system by having a slippery 30 round mag, the sky still hasn't fallen.
+1
unfortunately this path of common sense is a road less travelled. the lawmakers seem to think because of a tragedy involving unstable person and a firearm, the best course of action is to restrict the use of firearms on everybody, rather that identifying the unstable persons, and dealing with the instability.
how they can think that restricting pistol grips, bayonet lugs, flash hiders etc, makes anyone safer is beyond me.
I do completely agree with extra security, an Ecat safe is not that expensive, compared to the money involved in the contents stored in the safe, and considering they would be a highly sort after item to criminals.
Good sense here .i thought the whole reason for a a person to be licences and not the firearm was ensure correct checks were done on the person. Mikee and Tussock your on the money
Pretty much every shooter I know thinks the E cat system is a fuck around, easily circumvented, illogical, poorly administered, a token gesture, a total waste of time.
Which brings us back to politics and fear. On the right hand side Pollies tell ppl they'll be safe from (armed) crims as long as they vote for the right wing pollies, who will jail the nasty ppl. On the left, the do gooder pollies want to take the guns away as we might hurt ourselves...fun isnt allowed. I dont know which side to be afraid of more.
Which I suspect means its only a matter of time (incidents) before we see a much tougher regime here IMHO.
I think we need to come to terms with the fact that a large bloc of the public are hysterical when it comes to guns. What they know they learn from the movies and CNN. A good amount of these people hate us and no amount of logic or reasoning is going to change their perceptions. These people are a closed book. What we need to work on is mitigating their POV. I think the best way to do that is to actively recruit new people among our ranks. It's a numbers game, the more the merrier.
I try to reasonably convince people I know that terrible gun control laws are ineffective and silly for various reasons. It usually doesn't work.
It comes down to people's view being "Well I don't think people should be allowed to have that, it's scary" for no logical reason.
I once started a pro-active thread asking what changes people think should be made to the Arms Act, all I got was a bunch of wound up people thinking I was trying to get their guns taken off of them.
I'd be quite happy for the system to stay the way it is RIGHT NOW.
That'd be pretty reasonable to me too.
However, there are some changes I would like to be made if possible:
-Reduce max legal OAL requirements to say 500mm or something
-Increase vetting and security requirements for A cat
-Increase training/education requirements for A cat
-Scrap E cat system
-Remove 100mm barrel length restriction from B cat (Seriously, what the hell?)
Same,
- Add in >10 capacity mags to the restricted list.
- Some kind of practical course to get licence and more/on going checks to make sure people are 'fit &proper'.
- Allow C-Cat weapons to be used at certified ranges on certain days.
- All A cat storage requirements be the same as E requirements.
I think we have it pretty good in this country but there are some obvious loop holes that could be closed without affecting any law abiding people.
I'd like it to stay the way it is, but I'll change this this this and that.
I'm ok with laws that make sense, but it does my fucking head in when some things are dumb or come across as being vindictive, while doing nothing for public safety. Case in point being the crap E cat holders have to go through to import stuff.
- B & E cat the same thing, can shoot them off range, create an SBR class so you can have short AR's, semi auto sub guns etc on your endorsement
- Make it easy to import stuff you can legally own, no silly hoops and special reasons.
Yea I'd be happy with that
almost need to have a NZ gun show reality tv program lol, which shows proper gun safety etc in practice, i say reality show, cos want non gun ppl to watch it too.
The GC with guns lol, however i dont think those ppl would fall into the fit and proper persons category. (never watched GC just know is a reality show)
my sister in law is anti gun, and she admits it is cos she has no idea about them, and has no interest in learning. just thinks they are evil and no one should have one, and no one has a need for one. those are the sort of ppl that it is difficult to get to.
Hot Shots on NBC reality tv show with Jerry Miculek KC Eusebio, Max Michel etc.
not all reality shows are stupid, just the ones on NZ tv haha
would love to me able to watch that Hot Shots, however cannot find any source anywhere, except the small snippets on youtube etc, which just make me want to watch it more.
