If its a Savage and stamped no4 mk1* on the left side of the receiver, lots were shipped to NZ in 1942/43 I assume it has a N^Z and a second serial number on it. if not it was probably British sold off surplus after WW2 and imported commercially.

Pictures that open and its serial number will tell me more.

Yep Can I get a close up of the left side of the wrist where the serial number is please?

Does it have a 2 groove or 5 or 6 groove barrel?

The Rifle, No. 4 Mk I although first issued in 1939 was not officially adopted until 1941.
During the the Second World War, itwas further simplified for mass-production with the creation of the No. 4 Mk I* in 1942 but was produced only in North America, by Long Branch Arsenal in Canada and Savage-Stevens Firearms in the USA.

As res corectly pointed out, the "US ownership" was a "Lease lend" scenario to get around the USA providing war goods to the UK.

    They are not uncommon.
