firearm storage - help appreciated

My trip to NZ will last from late February until late March. I am planning to spend almost all the time backpack hunting in Canterbury. Occasionally I might stay a night or two in a hotel but that depends on various factors. Anyway I have planned to spend 2 or 3 days in Christchurch at the end of the trip... unless I need the time for hunting.:D

Originally I had agreed with Gun City to store my rifle at their premises if necessary.

Recently I was trying to apply for the visitor’s firearms license. Everything went fine until I had to provide details of a NZ firearms license holder. I asked Gun City but they don’t seem to be able (or don’t want) to provide such details. Pretty understandable as Gun City is a company while I have to provide details of an individual.

Thus I would like to kindly ask if someone on the forum could provide secure storage for my rifle. It would only be for a few days but it would help me a lot. And I’d still have Gun City as a backup if you are not at home or something.

The rifle is an ordinary Tikka T3... so nothing special from a legal point of view.

I’d be happy to store your rifle. Plenty of room in my safe, but I’m about half an hour north of the city so someone more central may be better, depending on how you are getting around.

I may well be in aussie that that time next year unfortunately.

I could be wrong , but I believe if you provide your name and storage facilities for an overseas visitor to use , then in effect you are sponsoring that person ( for the legal requirements of firearm use ) for the duration of their stay .
It opens you up to a degree of liability and responsibility if there happens to be an incident or accident.
Could anyone clarify if this is correct?

I don't think the nominated person for "storage" of the firearm has any further obligation or responsibility in respect of the visitor's firearm apart from the responsibility for adequate and suitable storage when it was in his possession, when it would then be as if the firearm were his property and accordingly a charge for care under his FAL. Remember,Plod is primarily concerned with the actions of the person who has the possession of any firearm.

Any "issues" arising from the visitor's use or misuse of his firearm then the visitor is the person Plod would be asking question of and taking action against .' I gathered that view from this as a requirement to be met by the applicant when applying for a visitors FAL.......

• "Demonstrate that you have made security arrangements for the safe storage of all firearms that you will be using (regardless of whether they are your own firearms or firearms that you intend to borrow while in New Zealand). You will need to provide the details of the New Zealand firearms licence holder(s) (with a current licence) that you will be storing firearms with while you are in New Zealand"

Thank you! That's definately an important reminder. Respecting my limited experience with river crossing I won't take any risks for sure. I did quite some research on the river crossings in the areas I am intending to visit... so I have at least an idea what river conditions I might have to expect.
